Job DescriptionSpecial Program Para educator 1, Life Skills – 6 hours per day, 9 months per year. One‑on‑one position. Fair Labor Standards Act Status:
Non‑Exempt.
- Documentation verifying a high school diploma or GED.
- One of the following: official transcripts verifying an Associate's degree (90 quarter, 60 semester) OR 72 quarter or 48 semester credits from an accredited institution; OR ETS Para Pro Assessment result of 461 or higher.
- One year of related experience working with children in an educational setting (preferred).
- Successful experience as part of an educational team (preferred).
- Exemplary interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment, supporting classroom or program goals.
- Excellent problem‑solving, analytical, and conflict‑resolution skills and ability to think quickly.
- Experience working with children with moderate to severe disabilities (preferred).
- Effective communication with and appreciation for individuals from diverse socio‑economic backgrounds.
- Ability to respond to evasive and aggressive behavior of students.
- Attendance at mandatory weekend training and successful completion of CPI, de‑escalation, and physical restraint training as required.
- Ability to learn and use a computer monitor, keyboard, and appropriate adaptive technologies.
- Implementation of educational programs and management of student behavior with direction from the teacher.
- Maintenance of confidentiality.
- Flexibility with assigned tasks and schedules.
- Development of relationships and supportive roles with children who have mental or physical disabilities.
- Ability to lift, move, and physically restrain a child as the job requires.
- Ability to escort students safely around school buildings, grounds, and in the community.
- Ability to observe student behavior and communicate observations to appropriate service providers.
- Regular attendance to carry out duties and responsibilities.
- Treat co‑workers, supervisors, students, parents, and others with dignity and respect at all times.
- Serve as a positive role model for students.
- Work flexibly and cooperatively.
- Assist the teacher in implementing and evaluating goals and objectives on individual student IEPs, participate in team meetings.
- Manage behavior and assist students during class activities in small groups or individually, providing instructional assistance as directed.
- Support teacher in preparing materials, maintaining data records, and data entry.
- De‑escalate students having an emotional/behavioral crisis; carry out behavior management plans.
- Dispense medication following district policy.
- Care for personal hygiene needs of students with disabilities (feeding, diapering, toileting, bathing, lifting, tube feeding, suctioning, etc.).
- Assist with teaching materials and record keeping.
- Correct papers and homework using a rubric or key.
- Observe assigned students in various settings and intervene as appropriate for safety.
- Attend training meetings to broaden expertise.
- Assist students on and off buses if required.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by administrator in alignment with job classification.
Salary range:
New employees start at the minimum hourly rate in the salary range. Employees with verified prior experience may receive experience credit.

Retirement:
Eligibility for retirement benefits through the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems. Eligibility is based on FTE.
