Overview

This Electronic Engineering Technician 2 position provides engineering, design, and field support within the agency’s System Engineering (TEN) Project Engineering, Telecom (TENP) group. Responsibilities include fiber optics, analog/mobile radio, digital radio, power line carrier, operational telephone, microwave towers and antennas, emergency AC/DC power and UPS systems, communications buildings, multiplex equipment, and monitoring systems such as alarm systems, FLAR, microwave monitor, and WANs used for operational data and network management.

The role supports project managers and engineering personnel in project implementation, field maintenance, and related engineering activities.

Organization

TENP (Project Engineering, Telecom) is responsible for application engineering, scoping, design, and technical leadership for upgrades or additions to the agency’s operational telecommunications system. Responsibilities also include reviewing contract design work, developing standards and construction specifications, and participating in equipment and technology evaluation teams. Coordination occurs with mechanical, architectural, structural, and substation engineering organizations. Work is primarily performed at a desk in an office environment, with coordination across engineering personnel and project managers.

All official drafts, documents and recommendations, as listed below, must be reviewed, finalized and approved by the appropriate manager or other federal personnel with the authority to do so.

  • Assist in maintaining databases related to the production of electrical and electronic drawings and documents.
  • Assist in preparing detailed design, material, or procurement specifications for equipment.
  • Assist in preparing engineering designs and developing engineering requirements for the development, installation, and modification of facilities based on analysis of engineering and design requirements, project parameters, and technical information from multiple sources.
  • Draft and prepare telecommunications standard guides and templates for assigned projects.
  • Participate in site visits to support telecommunications project scoping and design, verify equipment configuration at sites, and document as‑built records during project wrap‑up.
  • Support response to telecommunications engineering requests for information verification, such as waveguide distances, antenna locations, equipment spacing, etc.
  • Perform review of CAD and manually drafted drawings and other documents for drafting accuracy and completeness; provide feedback or make necessary corrections before review by engineers and technicians.
  • Participate on teams and individually to research and document existing inventory of telecommunications and related equipment; may include data entry and clean‑up efforts and coordination with the local District Resource Specialist.
  • Provide engineering technician expertise to support engineering design and field personnel in all aspects of project documentation.
  • Organize and analyze drawings prior to set‑up and discuss project complexity and time estimates with technical and supervisory personnel.
  • Draft designs from engineers’ idea notes and rough sketches utilizing sources such as electronic files, drawing stick files, and central records vault.
  • Participate in the development and revision of telecommunication drawing templates and standards.
  • Assist with various administrative duties, such as engineering record maintenance, including obtaining new drawing numbers, inputting drawing information into the organization’s CAD database at various stages of the CAD process, and completing necessary forms to submit final drawings to central records.
  • Perform sub‑system user file management within CAD systems, such as plotting, printing, storing, and retrieving drawings from Project Wise.
  • Update and maintain the As‑Built file structure within Project Wise; maneuver .pdf and .dgn files as requested.
  • Prepare and draft detailed As‑Built drawings via Micro Station CAD software.
