OVERVIEWThis full-time contract CAD Technician position will provide quality design, layout, and production of engineering, civil, mechanical, electrical, and fiber optic drawings within the Communications and Control Planning organization. This position will perform necessary research using standard, plan and profile, hardware, civil, and survey drawings, to control product reliability and accuracy for engineering, technical, and commercial applications. This position may assist other Transmission Planning organizations, such as Transmission Planning and Customer Service Engineering, with CAD tasks as needed.
RESPONSIBILITIESMajor Duties
65% Planning/Technical Support:
- Reviews electronic schematics and supporting documents to develop, compute, and verify specifications for drafting data.
- Develops methods and procedures to utilize computer-aided design (CAD) software.
- Utilizes CAD programs (Micro Station) to create/draft and/or revise project requirements diagrams, 60 Hz diagrams, customer long range plans, and communications diagrams in accordance with corporate standards and applicable regulations.
- Reviews preliminary sketches, drawings, specifications, and other engineering data to validate conformation to design concepts and to determine complexity and time estimates for completion.
- Provides technical support to engineers and interacts with other professional staff to collect data and information associated with planning for utility system interconnections.
- Provides technical guidance and training in the use of CAD software.
- Reviews drawings drafted by engineers to evaluate conformance to requirements and overall adequacy.
25% Planning Standards:
- Reviews and implements technical requirements for interconnection to the corporate transmission grid.
- Provides guidance and leadership in the development and application of planning templates, standards, and guidelines for technical long‑range plans, 60 Hz diagrams, communications diagrams and project requirements diagrams.
- Reviews and maintains long‑range plans, 60 Hz diagrams, communications diagrams, standards, and guidelines to ensure overall consistency in drawing content, format, and procedures.
- Verifies that project requirements diagram (PRD) standards reflect the appropriate CAD requirements.
- Plans and delivers standards and PRD development training to planning engineers.
10% Systems Support:
- Marks documents and maintains filing system(s), files, emails, and records in accordance with compliance requirements.
Education & Corresponding Experience
- High school diploma or GED is required.
- Associate’s degree or higher in a technical CAD training program is preferred.
- 4 years of civil, structural, or electrical CAD drafting experience is required.
Required Technical Skills & Experience
- Knowledge and certified training or experience in Micro Station or AutoCAD is required.
- Working knowledge of MS Office to include Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Word is required.
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and to complete the assigned tasks with accuracy and timeliness.
- Demonstrated ability to perform mathematical computations related to algebra and trigonometry, work on many concurrent activities, and perform engineering design using the CAD system in a multi-disciplined production environment.
- Carry out assigned tasks with a professional demeanor reflected in excellent written and oral communication skills, listening skills, patience, analytical reasoning, and problem‑solving abilities.
- Meet timelines, milestones, and deliverables and provide weekly status updates.
