Electronics Engineer 1 (Contract)
This Electronics Engineer 1 contract role supports the Testing and Commissioning – Specialty Services telecommunications group, focusing on the installation, integration, and troubleshooting of electronics and communication circuits across a large regional power transmission system. You will work closely with experienced engineers to implement capital communication projects involving digital radios, fiber optics equipment, network management systems, and command-and-control communication circuits that enable safe and reliable energy delivery.
The position is based at a construction services facility in Vancouver, Washington, and requires extensive travel—up to 95%—to remote field locations throughout the service area.
Responsibilities
- Compile technical results in clear summary formats such as tables, reports, and graphics to support engineering staff and project documentation.
- Perform engineering studies with assistance from subject matter experts, document findings in formal reports, and contribute to technical decision-making.
- Participate in teams that research, evaluate, and test telecommunication and related equipment for suitability and performance.
- Provide planning support for assigned projects, coordinate plans of service with internal and external stakeholders, and assist in implementing those plans.
- Use standard telecommunications guides, design templates, standards, and specifications to identify, correct, and document any errors or variances from approved engineering standards.
- Conduct field research by traveling to remote sites to collect physical and technical data needed for design, installation, and troubleshooting.
- Support start-up and commissioning of substation and control center communication facilities, including microwave, UHF, and other radios, multiplex equipment, telephone systems, and fiber optic systems, both in laboratory and field environments.
- Prepare equipment settings sheets and all required documentation to install, configure, and place in service the design packages associated with assigned projects.
- Perform installation and integration of communications equipment in the field, using technical documentation, drawings, and procedures to ensure proper configuration and operation.
- Provide project scheduling updates, including entering data into tracking systems, monitoring progress, and creating technical reports for work accomplished.
- Create, organize, and maintain document and records filing systems, including files, emails, and technical records, in accordance with compliance and information governance requirements.
- Share and distribute documents only to personnel with a lawful purpose to know, and ensure all official records are maintained in alignment with information security and lifecycle management standards.
- Validate that official records are accurate, complete, and available for auditing and compliance purposes.
- Support field maintenance crews and operations staff by providing professional engineering expertise related to telecommunication facilities and associated equipment.
- Assist project managers and other engineering personnel in implementing telecommunications projects, including design review, field support, and coordination with operations.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, preferably in electronic or telecommunications engineering.
- Candidates within 3 months of graduation may be considered, with proof of degree required after graduation.
- At least 6 months of electrical engineering experience, which may be paid, unpaid, or part of formal training.
- Knowledge of engineering concepts, principles, and practices applicable to components and facilities found on a regional transmission system.
- Ability to install, troubleshoot, and integrate electronics and communication circuits, including digital radios, fiber optics equipment, and network management systems.
- Skill in oral communication to effectively collaborate with clients, customers, field crews, and project teams.
