Position: Civil Engr 1 - Structural

Civil Engineer 1 - Structural

This contract Civil Engineer 1 – Structural assignment will provide support to the Structural and Civil Engineering (TELD) organization within Transmission Engineering and Technical Services (TE) at *** (BPA). Structural Design provides analysis and design services to support capital improvements and general maintenance, repairs, and upkeep of all structural aspects of BPA's transmission system, including transmission line towers and structures, substation structures including all equipment, bus and overhead cable supports, telecommunication towers and structures, buildings, and other structures on the transmission system.

The team is collaborative and likes to have fun together so the environment can be noisy at times with some distractions, but there are also times for quiet, independent work. The team is comprised of a mix of personalities, and everyone seems to fit in with their strengths recognized. We are looking for candidates that are flexible, collaborative, team focused and able to self-start and self-manage their workload.

Assignment Responsibilities:

  • Substation Structural Design (Footings, Foundations, Structures):
    Provide engineering support and assistance for substation structures including towers, poles, frames, trusses, pedestals, racks, and others.
  • Transmission Structural Design (Structures, Footings):
    Provide engineering support and assistance for various structure types as transmission line supports.
  • Telecommunication Structural Design (Structures, Footings, Non-structural Components):
    Provide engineering support and assistance for BPA's extensive communication network.
  • Building Structural Design/Analysis:
    Provide engineering support and assistance for building analysis and design.
  • Structural Maintenance and Program Sustainment:
    Provide engineering support and assistance for structural maintenance and program sustainment.
  • Technology Innovation and Research & Development Support:
    Provide support to BFTE structural engineers working in Technology Innovation (TI) and Research and Development (R&D) related activities.

Requirements:

  • Education & Corresponding Experience (required on matrix):
    Bachelor's degree from an ABET-accredited college/university in structural engineering, civil engineering, or a closely related engineering field is required. 6 months of practical structural engineering experience.
  • Required Technical Skills & Experience (required on matrix): 6 months of experience with the following:
    Designs using the current International Building Code (IBC) and American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) 7 and 10. Structural analysis software such as SAP
    2000, RISA, tnx Tower, PLS-POLE, and other commercially available products. Modern structural analysis techniques. Industry specific design codes such as the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), American Concrete Institute (ACI), and others. Proficient with standard MS Office Suite products, such as Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Preferred Skills & Experience (optional on matrix):
    Experience with Bentley Micro Station or other similar CAD programs. Knowledge of engineering concepts, principles, and practices applicable to components and facilities found on a regional transmission system. Knowledge of ASCE 41:
    Seismic Evaluation and Retrofit of Existing Buildings.

Additional Requirements (not required on matrix):
Valid U.S. Driver's License is required. First Aid/AED/CPR Certification required within 30 days of assignment start. Worker/Employer is responsible for maintaining current certification.

PPE Requirements:
White Hard Hat, Eye Protection, Hand protection (gloves), Footwear: ASTM F 2413-11 with an EH Rating or ASTM F2413-18 with an I/C/EH Rating. Footwear must lace up over the ankle and have a rigid sole and heel. The exterior of the boot must be made entirely of natural materials (all leather or leather and rubber combination) to conform to Arc-Flash requirements.

Electrical and Arc-Flash protective clothing and PPE as required by OSHA and consistent with BPA Safety and Health Policy for work on or near an energized facility.
