The Juvenile Detention Officer is responsible for the care, welfare, safety, and security of juveniles confined in the County Juvenile Detention Center. This includes performing intake functions, maintaining records, ensuring the health and safety of detainees, crisis intervention, and contributing to the overall security and cleanliness of the facility. The officer works under the guidance of the Juvenile Detention Lead worker and plays a crucial role in supporting the rehabilitation and well-being of detained youth.

Position Details:
This is a full-time, hourly position represented by the Juvenile Guild. The salary schedule for employees covered by the Juvenile Guild Contract consists of a salary range of eleven steps. Employees are eligible for step increases after 12 months of satisfactory service at each step in the range. We are an eligible employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. PSLF Info Additional Compensation:
Employees deemed to be bilingual receive an additional pay premium of fifty dollars ($100.00) per pay period. Uniform clothing allowance, shift differential, holiday premium pay, overtime, overtime meal allowance, and a 2% cost of living minimum increase. Join us in making a difference every day. * Two (2) years of experience in Criminal Justice or a closely allied field; or post-secondary education or training in the social or behavioral sciences, or criminal justice, may be substituted for up to eighteen (18) months of required experience.
* High school diploma or GED required.
* Possession of, or ability to obtain and maintain, a motor vehicle operator's license.
* Completion of Corrections Officer Academy (80 hours of training and passing of final examination) within 6 months of employment.
* Must be available and willing to work 40-hour, rotation shift coverage for a 24-hour per day, 7-day per week operation.
* Ability to complete training requirements, including the Washington Juvenile Corrections Officer Academy.
* Principles of human behavior and juvenile psychology.
* Pertinent laws, codes, and regulations relevant to juvenile detention and corrections.
* Basic self-defense techniques and crisis management skills.
* Computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, and case management software.
* Learn and comply with policies, regulations, and procedures related to Juvenile Detention.
* Enforce facility rules and regulations positively and effectively.
* Apply judgment and constructive attitudes toward detained juveniles, fostering a safe and supportive environment.
* Provide counseling and de-escalate tense situations during crises.
* Understand and apply appropriate restraint techniques when necessary.
* Maintain physical fitness to perform job-related duties.
* Communicate clearly and effectively with detainees, their families, and the public, ensuring clarity of complex regulations and procedures.
* Operate facility communication systems, security equipment, and computer terminals effectively.
* Respond to multiple tasks and information sources simultaneously.
* Administer first aid and CPR when needed.
* Maintain and use cleaning and painting equipment as required.
* Establish and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues, law enforcement personnel, detainees, and the public.
* Obtain and maintain a food handler’s card upon employment. The cost is covered by the county.
* Maintain Exceptional attendance and the ability to get to work in adverse conditions, as the job is an essential service.
