Job Description

Peace Health is seeking an Ophthalmic Technician Certified for a full‑time, 1.00 FTE, day position. The salary range for this job is $31.17 – $42.09. A hiring bonus may be available. The hiring rate depends on education, training, experience, collective bargaining agreements, seniority, and other factors.

Job Summary

Assist the Ophthalmologist or Optometrist in office‑based patient care and perform ophthalmic clinical duties such as testing, medication instillation, order processing, and documentation in the electronic medical record. Independently perform certain patient testing within scope of practice.

Details of the Position
  • Room patients; obtain ocular, medical, and family history; instruct patients on medications, tests, and procedures; coordinate patient flow; update patient records.
  • Perform testing as required, including visual acuity, visual fields, extraocular motions, intraocular pressure (applanation tonometry), pupil measurement, and refraction.
  • Record test data and act as a scribe in the electronic medical record; enter and process referrals and authorizations.
  • Independently perform intraocular pressure, visual field, and visual acuity testing.
  • Prepare exam rooms, maintain inventory, and perform room stocking.
  • Dispense contact lenses, instill ocular medications, and participate in telephone triage as needed.
  • Educate patients on eye care, contact lens care, and surgical procedures as appropriate.
  • Perform dictation, faxing, phone calls, and related clerical tasks.
  • Process coding, documentation, charting, and referrals.
  • Sterilely process surgical instruments and diagnostic lenses.
  • May complete scribe and/or optical duties as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
What You Bring
  • Accredited program required:
    Ophthalmic Technician in process, completed, or scheduled to take or already passed JCAHPO COT level.
  • Minimum of one year preferred: experience in an office‑based ophthalmology practice.
  • Required:

    within 12 months certified Ophthalmic Technician.
  • Required:

    upon hire Basic Life Support.

  • Computer proficiency with MS Office and the ability to learn new applications. (Required)

PHMG Eye Care – Vancouver: MA‑R (Medical Assistant Registered – Washington) required within 120 days of hire (clinic applies upon hire).

Working Conditions
  • Patient handling no greater than 35 lbs. without assistive equipment (NIOSH).
  • Ability to move around the area and use fine motor skills to operate medical equipment.
  • Occasional lifting/carrying up to 25 lbs.; push/pull up to 13 lbs. force frequently, up to 30 lbs. force occasionally.
  • Reaching frequently.
  • Exposure to biohazard, body fluids, and airborne particles.
  • Time spent on site in a medical/hospital setting.
  • Vision and hearing within normal limits (glasses, contacts, hearing aids permitted).
  • Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information.
