Job Description

This Phlebotomist III role focuses on providing high-quality specimen collection and processing in a fast-paced inpatient environment. You will perform blood draws and other specimen collections, ensure accurate labeling and handling, support laboratory workflows, and deliver courteous, professional service to patients and clinical staff. The position also involves troubleshooting, training support, and recommending workflow improvements to enhance safety, efficiency, and patient experience.

Responsibilities

+ Perform venipunctures and blood draws using straight needles and butterfly needles in a fast-paced inpatient setting.

+ Collect and store blood, urine, fecal, and other specimens according to established procedures and protocols.

+ Clearly and courteously explain venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures to patients to ensure understanding and comfort.

+ Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify all information for complete accuracy.

+ Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by specific test orders.

+ Check all test requisitions or computer-generated labels against provider scripts to ensure 100% accuracy.

+ Package specimens for transport and follow specific protocols to maintain specimen integrity during handling and transit.

+ Store specimens at the required temperatures and place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes with accurate labeling.

+ Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and all applicable safety and compliance standards.

+ Record maintenance data and perform decontamination procedures as required.

+ Update patient information accurately in the system and maintain thorough documentation.

+ Attend annual department trainings and maintain current knowledge of procedures, regulations, and best practices.

+ Answer telephone calls professionally and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries when appropriate.

+ Assist with troubleshooting issues related to specimen collection and processing and make recommendations to improve workflow.

+ Provide training support and serve as a resource for colleagues on phlebotomy techniques and procedures.

+ Deliver excellent customer service to patients, families, and healthcare team members.

+ Work scheduled second-shift hours and participate in weekend and holiday rotations as assigned.

Essential Skills

+ Valid phlebotomy certification for the state of employment, including an active Washington (WA) Phlebotomist License.

+ Minimum of 6 months of work experience performing venipunctures in a fast-paced laboratory or hospital setting.

+ High School Diploma or GED

+

Demonstrated proficiency in phlebotomy, including blood draws and specimen collection.

+

Experience with specimen processing, including labeling, centrifuging, splitting, freezing, and packaging specimens.

+ Ability to read and accurately follow physicians' orders and match requisition forms to specimen tubes.

+ Strong attention to detail and accuracy in labeling, documentation, and verification of test requisitions.

+ Working knowledge of OSHA and DEP regulations and commitment to safety and compliance.

+ Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite for basic documentation and communication tasks.

+ Excellent customer service skills with the ability to communicate clearly and courteously with patients and staff.

+ Ability to be on your feet and walk for extended periods throughout the shift.

+ Capability to work second shift and participate in scheduled weekend and holiday coverage.

Skills & Qualifications

+ One year or more of phlebotomy experience is preferred.

+ Experience working in inpatient settings, including exposure to pediatric and geriatric patient populations.

+ Experience in laboratory environments and specimen processing workflows.

+ Strong interpersonal and communication skills to support collaboration with multidisciplinary healthcare teams.

+ Ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and professionalism.

Work Environment

This role is based in an inpatient healthcare setting, supporting a busy and fast-paced clinical environment. You will work primarily on the second shift, from 1:00 PM to 9:30 PM, Monday through Friday, and you will be scheduled for weekend and holiday shifts as needed. The position requires being on your feet for most of the shift and walking frequently throughout the facility to perform collections and support laboratory operations.

You will work with standard phlebotomy and laboratory equipment, including needles, collection tubes, centrifuges, and specimen transport containers, while following strict safety, OSHA, and DEP guidelines.
