Job Description

Under the general direction of the Director of Information Technology, the Associate Director will oversee the daily operations of the ESD and contracted districts' wide area networks, local area networks, K‑20, data center and private cloud operations, and the supporting hardware. The position delivers services with excellent customer support and requires a deep understanding of network and server technologies to create innovative services that support district and ESD missions.

Functions
  • Assist the Director of Information Technology in managing, delivering, innovating, and driving business development of the IT department.
  • Maintain responsive, accountable services with rapid response to internal and external clients and appropriate follow‑through.
  • Manage client expectations, anticipate needs, and continually review existing services, designing new services as technology evolves.
  • Oversee technology infrastructure design and support implementation of emerging technology, hardware, and software acquisition for internal and external programs.
  • Ensure routine maintenance, updates, and monitoring of internal networks for agency and district clients.
  • Hire, supervise, and evaluate program staff.
  • Maintain secure infrastructure across all areas of cybersecurity for agency and district clients.
  • Maintain regular attendance to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position.
Other Functions
  • Participate in technology‑related activities to stay current with industry trends.
  • Serve as an active member of the business services leadership team.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned to support agency success.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field plus four years of related work experience. Equivalent combinations of education, experience, certification, and training may also be considered.
  • Experience building and fostering partnerships, including facilitation and negotiation of technology programs and services for users.
  • Experience in technology planning, deployment, and support.
  • Proficiency with TCP/IP, NAT, SIP, DNS, DHCP, Ping, Telnet, Trace Route, SSH, NFS, TFTP, and protocol analyzers such as Wire Shark.
  • Experience with complex network protocols such as VLANs and Q‑in‑Q (IEEE
    802.1ad).
  • Experience with network security protocols and hardening of network devices.
  • Experience with copper and fiber cabling and testing standards.
  • Experience with BGP and OSPF routing protocols, switches, and firewall configuration and management.
  • Recent successful experience managing highly complex TCP/IP networks that include multiple routers, routing protocols, and media types, including wireless.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Information Technology, Business Administration, or a related field.
  • Experience installing, configuring, and maintaining server hardware and associated network equipment, including storage technologies.
  • Recent experience deploying and maintaining modern enterprise system software such as VMware, Linux, and Microsoft Windows.
  • Working technical knowledge of scripting languages (PHP, shell, other Linux or Windows scripting).
  • Working knowledge of load balancing, clustering, and web application security.
  • Experience planning, deploying, and supporting technology in a public sector or non‑profit environment, including use of grant programs such as E‑Rate.
  • Recent knowledge of data center facilities including HVAC, power, security, and fire suppression systems and energy‑efficient practices.
  • Successful experience in a regional educational service agency or K‑12 environment.
  • Broad knowledge of existing and emerging technologies.
  • Strong analytical, problem‑solving, collaboration, persuasion, and client‑focused skills.
  • Effective communication at all organizational levels and with varied audiences.
Working Conditions and Employment Requirements
  • Requires frequent travel.
  • May require flexible hours to meet deadlines.
  • Office environment.
  • Must operate keyboard to accomplish required tasks.
  • Frequent sitting, stooping/bending, lifting/carrying up to 30 lbs.
  • Must successfully complete a criminal history check through the Washington State Patrol.
