Division Manager Summary of Position

Provide superior leadership and management to the division in accordance with company beliefs, policies, procedures, and objectives. The Division Manager reports directly to the General Manager and is responsible for operations in its totality including safety compliance, people and resources, estimating, business development, sales, project execution, profit/loss outcomes, and the overall conduct of Black & McDonald Limited’s performance within the region as it relates to their designated area.

Health, Safety and Environment
Ensure the Company is in compliance both procedurally and in spirit with state, client and company occupational health, safety, and environment regulations; adherence to achieve zero loss time injuries in every workplace.

Provide encouragement, support and objectives to promote W.J. McDonald's Code of Business and to implement continuous improvement initiatives within the region.
All systems, policies and procedures employed in the Company meet the Corporate Policy. A desirable corporate image is maintained through the professional presentation of our buildings, sites, vehicles, proposals and personnel.

Strategic Planning and Objectives
To encourage participation by key employees in the annual planning process resulting in an acceptable business plan that blends with regional and national objectives that define the key result areas of each operation.
Annual business development and business plans are in place for each operation, implemented, and reviewed monthly.

Financial
Meet budget requirements relating to cash flow, WIP, Profit and Loss, and net assets.
Adequate controls are in place, implemented and reviewed for due diligence: estimating, tendering, purchasing, subcontracting and accounting.
Man hours and labor productivity are the primary focus of job management. Weekly reports are produced and reviewed.
Fully funded clients and good cash flow are the primary focus of administration and are reviewed bi-weekly.

People
Establish and annually update performance/potential chart and succession plan for key employees through 100% adherence to the Human Resources Toolbox for overall leadership development.
Foster a climate within the division of cooperation and enthusiasm where new ideas can flourish, people can grow, and where teamwork, morale and levels of communication are enhanced.
Be capable of holding difficult conversations both upstream and downstream, creating a culture of honesty and diplomatic candor.

Business Development
Develop and maintain professional relationships with major customers and prospects and focus business development efforts of the division towards areas of greatest opportunity.
Effective use of and championing of customer relationship management program and weekly participation in and oversight of opportunity pipeline meetings to ensure the business is adequately diversified from a customer base perspective.

Risk
Encourage division staff to evaluate risk versus opportunity. Continually assess exposure, therefore minimizing risk to the company particularly on large construction projects and/or poorly funded areas.

Reporting / Reviewing
Quarterly:
Business review adhering to established Key Result Areas (KRAs).
Annually:
Strategic planning and setting objectives / Year-end report adhering to established KRAs / HR Leadership Development review / Business Plan/ Business Development Plan.

Education and Skill Requirements
  • A university degree in engineering or construction technology with a concentration in the required division discipline (extensive experience in the construction industry may substitute for post‑secondary education requirements).
  • Extensive knowledge of established construction and maintenance practices, procedures and techniques as well as applicable local and provincial labour codes.
  • Managerial experience in a union environment.
  • Ability to read and comprehend applicable financial statements.
