The Pacific Northwest’s premier steel fabricator, Thompson Metal Fab, Inc., is in immediate need of a skilled and experienced Swing Shift Prefab Machine Operator. Serving the Civil, Hydro, Oil & Gas, and custom fabrication industries. We are an AISC, API, ASME, and WABO certified facility. With over 85 years in the industry, we have a reputation for producing some of the highest quality fabricated products on the West Coast.

Position Description

Job Summary:

The Prefab Machine Operator is responsible for operating a variety of steel processing machines to support fabrication work. This includes tasks such as cutting, forming, and preparing materials using equipment like the Cutting Tables, Beamlines, Press Brakes, Rolls, and Saws. Operators are expected to work safely, follow shop drawings and cut lists, and contribute to team goals through quality work and communication.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Operate machinery to process steel material of various forms in preparation for fabrication. Machinery includes: plasma table, oxy-fuel table, beamline, plate processor, press brake, and saw.
  • Operate overhead cranes and forklifts to handle material in the loading and unloading of processing machinery.
  • Cross train on other machinery and equipment in the Prefab Department.
  • Read and understand material cut sheets, shop drawings, and other instructions related to the position and work tasks.
  • Measure and inspect processed parts. Verify completeness and accuracy of work product.
  • Perform operator-level preventive maintenance, checks, and services on machinery and equipment.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.
  • Effectively communicate with others to execute tasks common in the steel fabrication industry in the most efficient and effective manner.
  • Make a continuous effort to improve production, quality, and safety – while working cooperatively as part of the team.
  • Prioritize safety and follow all applicable safety rules.
  • Perform all other related duties as needed or assigned.
Position Requirements REQUIREMENTS: KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, EDCUCATION & EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • 2+ years experience operating metal processing machinery.
  • Ability to read and interpret cut sheets and nesting information.
  • Ability to read and understand shop drawings.
  • Familiarity with various material types including ferrous and non-ferrous alloys.
  • Understanding of equipment parameters, speeds, and feeds.
  • Familiarity with heavy plates and materials associated with bridge building.
  • Knowledge of standard tools, materials, motions, and practices of the welding trade.
  • Ability to stand for an extended periods - 8 hours minimum.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects (up to 50 lbs) unassisted.
  • Ability to perform job duties that require standing, kneeling, crouching, twisting upper body, reaching, and climbing.
  • Ability to work in hot and cold environments.
  • Ability to work in an environment with exposures to dust, odors, fumes, bright lights, and noise.
