Overview
The Humane Society for Southwest Washington is seeking an Adoption Counselor to join our team. This is a part-time (20 to 25 hours per week), FLSA nonexempt opportunity. We are the largest animal welfare agency in Southwest Washington with campuses in Vancouver and Longview, providing adoption services, pet care programs, and community support.
Responsibilities- Educate clients on responsible animal guardianship and care
- Provide prompt in-person and telephone customer service
- Assist with donations, including monetary and in-kind gifts
- Generate revenue in retail sales through suggestive selling
- Promote and match HSSW animals to appropriate families
- Conduct adoptions, provide counseling/animal selection assistance, enter data, complete paperwork, and perform follow-up services
- Keep service desk area orderly, stocked, and cleaned; daily cleaning of public areas
- Assist in training of volunteers, staff, and partners
- Keep team leads and supervisors informed of animal behavior and health concerns
- Maintain accurate kennel and computer records
- Represent HSSW professionally and courteously
- Take initiative to perform other duties as needed
- Safely perform physical work for long shifts
- Ability to safely handle a variety of companion animals
- Minimum two years of animal handling experience
- Minimum one year of customer service experience
- Minimum one year experience with data entry
- Ability to work a flexible schedule including some weekends
- Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment with diverse populations
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office
- Excellent interpersonal skills with strong social and emotional intelligence
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Follow safety guidelines to maintain a safe work environment
- Promote cross-department communication and cooperation
- Exercise good judgment with the public, volunteers, and staff
- Maintain integrity of HSSW’s mission and adoption program
- Knowledge of reward-based training
- Adhere to organizational policies and procedures
- Be a positive role model for colleagues
- Maintain a respectful attitude and flexible time management
- Report to work on time and meet department productivity standards
The hourly pay range for this position is $17.82 to $18.36 per hour, starting pay based on experience.

This position accrues PTO at 1.6 hours per 40 hours worked. Includes floating holidays for full-time employees and other leave.
