Trade Chemistry Specialist

The Trade Chemistry Specialist will support the U.S. Forest Service International Programs’ Wood Identification and Screening Center (WISC) in advancing global efforts to combat illegal timber trafficking. Working in a laboratory setting in Vancouver, Washington, this role collaborates closely with analytical chemists, lab technicians, and academic partners to expand the use of advanced wood identification technologies.

Responsibilities
  • Establish and support start-up operations for a new wood identification laboratory, including workflow development and standard operating procedures.
  • Catalog and organize a reference library of wood samples using systematic (alphabetical and numerical) methods.
  • Collect and analyze chemical data from reference specimens using multiple analytical instruments, including mass spectrometry.
  • Execute laboratory workflows and processes related to analytical services and regulatory support.
  • Manage day‑to‑day laboratory operations, including coordination with partners and stakeholders.
  • Collaborate with academic partners and researchers on shared scientific objectives.
  • Assist with training activities, study tours, and workshops related to wood identification technologies.
  • Support expansion of WISC services into commercial regulatory applications.
  • Maintain regular communication and reporting to the Assistant Director for Trade.
Qualifications
  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Chemistry or a closely related field.
  • Hands‑on experience with chemical instrumentation, particularly mass spectrometry.
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety standards and best practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel.
  • Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage samples, data, and workflows.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams, including scientists, technicians, and external partners.
