The employee in this position performs intermediate assignments in the diagnostic and repair of transit buses under the general supervision of the Maintenance Shop Supervisor. The incumbent documents all repairs in accordance to shop rules and procedures.

Diagnose transit bus complexities based on observational and mechanical testing.

Performs, with minimal supervision, all repairs to vehicles and equipment as assigned by the lead mechanic and/or Shop Supervisor with a minimum amount of repeat work and a ninety-five percent accuracy as the standard of measurement.

Ensures all repair orders, vehicle condition reports and other administrative work is documented and submitted for confirmation.

Removes, repairs, and replaces all major damaged parts on all Vitran's fixed routes, ADA's, and operations vehicles (transmission, engine, clutch, brakes, etc.) with minimal supervision or assistance.

Performs preventative maintenance on all vehicles, in addition to mechanical, electrical and hydraulic repairs, and reports all deficiencies to the immediate supervisor.

Ensures all minor repair jobs are completed prior to vehicle being dispatched.

Maintains familiarity with geographical area and equipment so as to eliminate extended breakdowns.

Cleans and maintains work area and other assigned areas (shop and equipment) daily to ensure a safe and efficient work environment.

Maintains a professional work shop attire.

Performs other related duties as assigned or required.

Qualifications
  • High school diploma with three-hundred (300) hours of technical training and hands‑on mechanical and electrical troubleshooting.
  • Three (3) years of experience in the field of diesel and gas engine repairs.
FACTOR 1- KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION
  • Knowledge of the operation of a maintenance shop and the use of tools and equipment required to conduct repairs.
  • Ability to perform simple mathematical computations and measurements; ability to read and write.
  • Ability to perform intermediate mechanical duties and physical agility to lift objects in excess of seventy (70) pounds.
  • Analytical skills and the ability to pay attention to detail.
FACTOR 2 – SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

Employee works under general supervision of the Maintenance Shop Supervisor or any other higher level official who assigns duties and provides guidance. The employee's work is controlled by daily review and reporting in addition to consultation with the Maintenance Shop Supervisor or other higher level official.

FACTOR 3 – GUIDELINES

The employee must follow departmental and Federal (OSHA) guidelines, policies and procedures.

FACTOR 4- COMPLEXITY

After receiving assignments from the Maintenance Shop Supervisor, an incumbent performs the required diagnostic tests and/or performs the required preventive maintenance tasks. Upon analyzing the diagnostic tests, he/she prepares documentation of the job(s) to be performed along with recommendations for its completion. The incumbent is required to complete the job(s) with some supervision and/or assistance.

FACTOR 5 – SCOPE AND EFFECT

To diagnose and repair transit buses, in addition to conducting preventative maintenance, hence ensuring the safety of public transportation.

FACTOR 6- PERSONAL CONTACTS

Contacts are with managerial personnel, employees from other government agencies, and other administrative officials.

FACTOR 7 – PURPOSE OF CONTACTS

The purpose of contacts is to provide and/or exchange information concerning progress on repairs on transit buses following all diagnoses.

FACTOR 8 – PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Physical agility to lift objects in excess of seventy (70) pounds; ability to talk and hear within normal range; read and analyze information in shop manual and books; physical dexterity to manipulate objects and mechanical tools during the course of work.

FACTOR 9- WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work is performed in a maintenance warehouse or a maintenance shop. Level of temperature, ventilation, lighting and sound may vary in the work environment.
