Step Into the Role Families Depend On. When a family arrives at our shelter in a moment of uncertainty, the first person they meet can change everything. Our on‑call Family Advocates are the steady, compassionate, quick‑stepping humans who walk in when someone else can’t—keeping the shelter running, keeping families calm and supported, and keeping hope alive.
We’re looking for a dedicated on‑call advocate to join our team. Your schedule is yours to shape, and as you demonstrate reliability, curiosity, and commitment, this role could grow into part‑time or full‑time work with benefits based on operational need.
Our Core Values- Being Radically Empathetic: Stepping into someone’s shoes without judgment, meeting people with dignity, humility, and deep listening.
- Being Collaborative Stewards: Designing intentionally, taking smart risks, using data and feedback, and always asking how to do better.
- Being Curiously Accountable: Honoring every dollar, volunteer, and partner by working with trust, transparency, and accountability.
- Being Intentional Innovators: Asking questions, seeking to understand, and owning our impact—learning out loud and welcoming accountability as a path to excellence.
- Being Compassionately Competitive: Caring deeply and competing to lead, innovate, and deliver better outcomes—driven by purpose and love.
At Family Promise of Spokane, you’re not just filling in — you’re stepping into crucial moments for families working to rebuild stability. You’ll be part of a mission‑driven team that values honesty, curiosity, growth, and compassion.
Every time you take a shift, you:
- Offer grounding and safety to families during unpredictable moments.
- Support a culture that is collaborative, innovative, and committed to doing things better.
- Play a direct role in transforming how our community responds to family homelessness.
- Create a Welcoming Environment: Offer a safe, friendly, respectful atmosphere for guest families, volunteers, and partners.
- Support Families in Crisis: Provide compassionate listening, emotional support, and practical guidance to help families access services, resources, and case management.
- Ensure Smooth Shelter Operations: Support daily tasks such as meal coordination, cleaning, laundry, and inventory to keep the shelter running smoothly.
- Lead by Example: Guide volunteers, interns, and team members with calm, supportive leadership and consistent adherence to protocols.
- Document and Communicate: Keep accurate records and communicate updates clearly through internal tools like Slack and Google Suite.
- Promote Safety and Stability: Monitor shelter activities, uphold safety procedures, and respond confidently in emergencies.
- Engage Volunteers: Welcome and train volunteer groups while fostering a spirit of gratitude, teamwork, and shared purpose.
- Experience: At least one year working with families or individuals experiencing homelessness, housing instability, or crisis — paid or volunteer. Lived experience is valued.
- Education: Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, Human Services, or a related field preferred but not required; equivalent experience welcome.
- Skills: Strong communication, emotional intelligence, multitasking with confidence, calm under pressure, sound judgment, problem‑solving, time management, reliable follow‑through, and the ability to work independently or as part of a team — especially in moments when your steadiness makes all the difference.
- Technology: Comfortable with Google Suite, Slack, and basic data entry.
- Driving: A valid driver’s license is required; transporting families may be part of your work.
- Language: Ability to clearly document case notes and communicate effectively in English.
Ready to Step In When It Counts? If you’re energized by meaningful work, if you thrive when supporting families during real moments of need, and if you want a role where you can choose your schedule while making a tangible impact — we’d love to meet you.
