Join us in shaping Seattle’s streets!

At the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT), we don’t just move people—we connect communities, build safer streets, and create a more sustainable city.

With a bold vision for the future, we’re tackling big challenges: making travel safer, cutting carbon emissions, and ensuring reliable, affordable transportation for everyone—no matter who they are or where they live.

Seattle is growing fast, and we’re building sidewalks, fixing bridges, and improving transit connections to keep our city moving.

We’re a team of problem solvers, planners, engineers, communicators, and field crews—bringing purpose-driven work to life. Let’s build a Seattle that works for everyone—together!

Senior Traffic Maintenance Laborer

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Senior Traffic Maintenance Laborer to join our Parking Shop team within the Transit & Mobility Division. In this role, you will lead field operations supporting the installation, maintenance, and removal of paid parking infrastructure, traffic signs, curb painting, and graffiti abatement across SDOT’s managed curb spaces. You will support a small crew to maintain a reliable, equitable, and efficient parking system serving the people who live in, work in, and visit Seattle.

Responsibilities
  • Lead a two-person crew in the installation, removal, and maintenance of parking pay stations, traffic signs, curb markings, and other non-electrical traffic control devices across Seattle’s on-street paid parking network.
  • Install and maintain curb paint markings for load zones, bus zones, and other designated parking areas, ensuring clear visibility and compliance with traffic regulations.
  • Evaluate field conditions and exercise independent judgment to determine proper sign and device placement when work orders are incomplete or physical conditions require adjustment.
  • Determine materials and equipment needed for assigned jobs, assign daily duties to crew members, and manage work schedules to ensure projects are completed safely and on time.
  • Set up temporary and emergency traffic control for special events, parades, street closures, and emergency situations, ensuring streets can be safely closed and traffic rerouted under strict timelines and adverse conditions.
  • Conduct graffiti abatement and perform routine maintenance on pay station infrastructure, parking meter posts, traffic signposts, and related equipment to ensure continued functionality and compliance across the Parking Shop’s service area.
  • Operate and maintain specialized tools and equipment required for traffic control device and pay station installation, removal, and upkeep across Seattle’s roughly 1,400 pay stations and 9,000 on-street paid parking spaces.
  • Support department goals in promoting diversity and social justice.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Two (2) years of experience performing general laboring and manual work involving the installation, repair, removal, and maintenance of non-electrical traffic control devices, including parking pay stations and associated signage.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience that demonstrates the ability to perform the position duties.
  • Preferred:
Experience working with the public, providing exceptional customer service; excellent communication and time management skills, with a commitment to accuracy and process improvement.
Other Requirements
  • May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
  • Required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.
  • Frequently required to lift objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Required to work outdoors in all weather conditions, and while exposed to traffic and heavy exhaust fumes.
License, Certification and Other Requirements
  • Current State of Washington driver’s license.
  • Ability to obtain a flagger’s card and First Aid card after hire date.
  • May undergo a physical exam prior to the hire date.
