The Truck Driver position requires reliable and safe transportation of mail, packages, and equipment across the National Capital Region, supporting government operations under the Department of State (DoS).

Position SummaryThe Truck Driver is responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of mail, packages, parcels, equipment, and various products from the Department of State (DoS) to government facilities, warehouses, and other designated locations within the National Capital Region (NCR). Duties include loading and unloading containers, maintaining vehicle inspection records, completing trip reports, and ensuring compliance with DoS safety and accountability requirements.
PrimaryDuties & Responsibilities
- Receive, classify, reconcile, interpret, consolidate, and summarize documents and information using standard office equipment.
- Process, sort, track, and deliver all incoming and outgoing mail and shipments using the DoS system of record.
- Transport mail and materials on assigned routes throughout the NCR, following established schedules and procedures.
- Maintain vehicle inspection records for potential DOT stops and complete all trip reports and mileage logs.
- Engage with customers and company employees to exchange information and provide professional customer service.
- Secure cargo and manage loading/unloading of containers and equipment at docks.
- Report major mechanical issues to maintenance personnel and conduct routine mechanical and safety checks.
- Navigate routes using knowledge of roads and traffic conditions, and adjust delivery paths to meet emergency or time‑critical needs.
- Follow HAZMAT procedures for handling potentially hazardous mail and may require opening mail for forwarding to appropriate locations.
- Organize incoming deliveries for outbound transport and maintain accurate records, logs, and related documentation.
- Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.
- High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED) required.
- At least two (2) years’ experience in mail or distribution operations.
- Top‑Secret security clearance required; must be able to obtain and maintain a government‑issued security clearance.
- Valid U.S. Driver’s License with a clean driving record and ability to obtain a Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). fitness to meet DOT requirements and complete a physical exam every two years.
- Proficiency with U.S. Postal Service products, rules, regulations, and experience using commercial carrier shipping services (UPS, Fed Ex, DHL) and related software.
- Experience operating a high‑volume postage meter.
- Strong reading, writing, and basic arithmetic skills, including handling currency and measurements.
- Basic computer proficiency in Microsoft Office and mail tracking systems, with typing skills.
- Ability to work independently, make minor decisions, and stand, reach, and walk for extended periods.
The employee regularly stands, stoops, kneels, walks, and sits. Regularly lifts or moves up to 25 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds. The role requires clear vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work EnvironmentThe work environment is usually quiet to moderate in noise level. The position involves frequent travel within the NCR and interaction with government and non‑government personnel.
