Overview
Responsible for all activities associated with safely operating paper bag machines including setup, operation, quality checks, cleanup, and recommending improvements to operations to meet customer demand.
Responsibilities- Work safely at all times, be aware of surroundings and understand and comply with Pratt Industries Safety rules, operating procedures, and help hold co-workers responsible for safety related items. Participate in Plant Safety Committee.
- Follow at all times GMPs (Good Manufacturing Processes).
- Perform a range of production support responsibilities, including various machine adjustments and maintenance tasks. Must be comfortable with touch screen controls.
- Support start‑up operations by stripping, preparing, setting and changing rolls, ink, or other raw materials to manufacture the product.
- Gather finished product from machines and box, bag or package as required.
- First bag out quality check and ongoing inspections, checking the condition and quality of the finished product and removing any that do not meet quality standards; confirm no process changes or quality issues.
- Maintain accurate count of product when packing or bagging, and keep pace with varying production speeds/levels.
- Secure cases to prevent shifting or moving by stacking them orderly.
- Operator must have basic reading and math skills.
- Mechanical and problem‑solving abilities are necessary.
- Responsible for equipment set up and productivity.
- Check job order and set machine accordingly.
- Learn and comply with Pratt Industries quality procedures and policies. Stop bad quality from leaving the facility to the customer.
- Maximize equipment utilization by operating within capacity and speed. Improve setup times and reduce downtime daily. Identify and report mechanical concerns to Production Supervisor, Production Manager, or Plant Mechanical Tech/Specialist.
- Housekeeping and cleaning of work areas—keep clean and free of tripping hazards during shift and at shift end. Maintain good housekeeping in all areas, including break rooms and bathrooms.
- Learn and understand machine capability and capacity to drive efficiencies while limiting waste and downtime. Do not sacrifice quality for speed.
- Train and assist Assistant Machine Operators, Machine Helpers, and Production Utility with job duties, downtime, setup times, and quality.
- Complete necessary reports accurately and timely, including Production Data, Machine Operational Status, Safety Data, Quality Data.
- Cross‑train on other machines and learn other positions in the plant. Switch duties with co‑workers as necessary to support plant growth and personal/professional development.
- Comply with all company policies and procedures, including safety and good housekeeping.
- Must be able to work overtime as necessary, sometimes on short notice. Service is 24x7–365, including unavoidable holidays.
- Additional duties may be assigned by management.
- Prior work experience in the packaging industry (paper, plastics, converting).
- 6 months’ experience in a manufacturing operation.
- High school diploma or GED.
Able to read and follow instructions, quality, safety, and job packets.
Mathematical SkillsAble to read a tape measure accurately, calculate figures such as percentages, measurements, volume, and rate, and apply concepts of high school math.
Reasoning AbilityAbility to apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or graphic form; handle problems involving one or more concrete variables in standardized situations.
Certificates, Licenses, RegistrationsMay be required to maintain a current Lift Truck Operator License.
Physical DemandsRegularly required to stand, walk, talk, hear, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Occasionally required to sit. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Required vision includes close, distance, color, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Work EnvironmentRegular exposure to moving mechanical parts; wet and/or humid conditions; occasional high or precarious places; fumes or airborne particulates; vibration. Noise level is usually loud.
