Pay: $70,000-$100,000/year depending on experience. First 6 months is probationary with hourly pay, after which the role transitions to full-time salary with benefits subject to satisfactory performance.

Rail Star Engineering provides quality civil and structural engineering to short lines, ports, and nonprofits across the Pacific Northwest. We are a small firm that performs a broad range of railroad-related engineering and specializes in existing railroad bridges.
Role
Description:
The Railroad Design Engineer will perform a wide range of railroad engineering. This role will include the following:
- Civil and Structural Engineering
- Bridge Inspection and Other Fieldwork
- Drawing and Report Development
- Marketing and Proposal Writing
Travel and fieldwork is about 30% of the role. Occasional travel across the United States is expected but most is within the Pacific Northwest. The ideal candidate will be equally interested in both structural and civil engineering and have experience in, or be excited to learn about, the railroad industry.

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Interest or experience in structural engineering.
- Physically able to crawl, climb, carry equipment, and be outside in all weather conditions during fieldwork. Comfortable working at heights and near water (safety training provided).
- Able to demonstrate legal right to work in the United States.
- The ability to successfully pass a drug screening is required, as this role includes work on railroad property.
- Familiarity with Microsoft Suite and AutoCAD or other drafting software.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with rail structures design, inspection and rating, construction, or asset management; including AREMA and FRA Bridge Safety Standards.
- E.I.T. certification or P.E. license, or the interest in obtaining one.
- Experience with any of the following:
Bluebeam, Civil 3D, QGIS, and structural analysis software like SAP
2000 or RISA.
