The General Superintendent is a senior management role responsible for leading J2 Solutions' superintendent team, owning project schedule performance, and helping shield the Vice President of Operations from the majority of day-to-day jobsite challenges. This position exists to improve consistency, accountability, and execution across all active projects by proactively monitoring field operations, coaching superintendents, intervening early when risks arise, and raising the overall standard of field leadership across the company.
This role is primarily managerial in nature. While the General Superintendent may run select projects, especially during the early evolution of the role, the position is judged mainly on its ability to improve the performance of the superintendent group, strengthen schedule reliability, elevate safety and compliance, and solve field problems before they become larger operational burdens.
What You'll Be DoingField Leadership and Superintendent Oversight
- Provide day-to-day leadership, direction, coaching, and accountability to all superintendents.
- Monitor all active field projects through superintendent communication, project reports, Procore logs, site visits, and direct follow-up.
- Set and reinforce expectations for field leadership, schedule ownership, communication, documentation, professionalism, and jobsite organization.
- Conduct regular site visits with strong field presence, especially on larger projects and key repeat-client projects.
- Review superintendents' weekly paperwork, project logs, and reporting for accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.
- Conduct annual performance reviews for superintendents and support ongoing coaching, feedback, and improvement planning throughout the year.
- If necessary, create, implement, and enforce PIP (Performance Improvement Plans) as needed for corrective action of personnel not meeting the company standards and procedures.
- Support the hiring, onboarding, development, and offboarding of superintendents in coordination with HR and Operations leadership.
- Approval of PTO for superintendents and plan/ensure project coverage is thoughtfully managed in a proactive manner.
Schedule Ownership and Project Execution
- Own and improve overall field schedule performance across J2's active projects.
- Review daily schedules, look-aheads, milestone progress, and superintendent planning to identify risks early and help drive faster, more reliable project completion.
- Work closely with project managers and superintendents to improve sequencing, manpower planning, trade coordination, and recovery plans when projects drift off schedule.
- Help ensure weekly subcontractor meetings, toolbox talks, and planning efforts are occurring consistently and are useful, organized, and action-oriented.
- Drive a culture where superintendents proactively manage schedules rather than react to delays after the fact.
- Identify recurring schedule problems across projects and recommend improvements to field processes, training, planning habits, and accountability systems.
Field Problem Solving and Escalation Management
- Serve as the first line of leadership for day-to-day jobsite issues arising from field conditions, subcontractors, logistics, staffing, coordination challenges, documentation gaps, or superintendent decision-making.
- Resolve the large majority of field issues directly and correctly, while keeping the Vice President of Operations appropriately informed.
- Escalate more serious matters promptly and clearly, including direct-report disciplinary concerns, highly upset customers, jobsite injuries, near misses, threat of claims or lawsuits, and major subcontractor or vendor disputes.
- Step into troubled projects to stabilize communication, planning, field leadership, and schedule recovery efforts.
- Help prevent "silent failures" by ensuring less-experienced superintendents surface issues early rather than assuming conditions are under control.
Safety, Quality, and Healthcare Compliance
- Reinforce company safety expectations and ensure superintendents are maintaining safe, compliant, and organized jobsites.
- Support and monitor superintendent compliance with required healthcare construction protocols and documentation, including ICRA, PCRA, OSHA, Joint Commission, and AHCA-related requirements where applicable.
- Support superintendents to plan and execute occupied-facility work, shutdowns, tie-ins, phased construction, and acute-care logistics with strong attention to risk and communication.
- Promote consistent field quality standards by verifying that work is installed in accordance with drawings, specifications, codes, and J2 expectations.
