Licensed Optician

Job Summary

Licensed Opticians prepare and dispense lenses, spectacles, eyeglasses, contact lenses, and other optical devices. They are also certified to duplicate lenses accurately as to power, without prescription. Additionally, a board‑certified optician qualified and operating under rules established by the board may fill, fit, adapt, or dispense any soft contact lens prescription. They may also fill, fit or dispense any extended wear or hard contact lens prescription to the extent authorized by the prescribing allopathic or osteopathic physician or optometrist.

Essential

Job Functions
  • Interpret prescriptions written by ophthalmologists and optometrists.
  • Collect eye measurements (pupillary distance, seg height, base curve, width and thickness).
  • Help clients select the best lens and treatment options based on their needs.
  • Make proper lens material choices.
  • Help clients select the most appropriate frame for their facial structure and prescription.
  • Troubleshoot concerns about patients’ vision and eyewear.
  • Neutralize and inspect prescription lenses with a lensometer.
  • Identify wanted and unwanted prism as per prescription.
  • Navigate insurance websites to assist patients with the available benefits and costs.
  • Prepare orders for lab technicians to ensure delivery of the proper lenses.
  • Adjust eyeglasses to ensure a proper fit.
  • Repair broken frames.
  • Educate clients on proper eyeglass and contact lens care.
  • Track orders, prescriptions and inventory.
  • Adhere to applicable laws, regulations and contractual obligations; follow principles of the Compliance Program and the Code of Conduct.

Supervisory Responsibilities

The position has no supervisory responsibilities.

Work Environment

Fast‑paced, deadline‑oriented, confidential department. Noise level is usually moderate.

Physical Demands
  • Excessive walking, standing, bending and stooping.
  • Often required to stand, sit, use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or control, reach with hands and arms and talk or hear.
  • Occasionally required to climb or balance, kneel and crouch.
  • May need to lift moderately heavy objects (50–90 pounds).
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

Full‑time. Monday through Friday 8:00 A.M.–5:00 P.M. (occasionally 7:00 P.M. in specific locations) with occasional overtime. Saturdays 8:00 A.M.–12:00 P.M. in specific locations.

Travel

Travel and driving required for some locations.

Required

Education and Experience
  • Associate degree in Opticianry from an accredited institution or completion of a three‑year Florida apprenticeship program.
  • Licensure in the State of Florida.
  • Valid Florida driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • OR Practiced opticianry in a state outside Florida and licensed outside Florida.
Preferred

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree.
