Position Summaryis seeking a tax professional to test federal and state tax preparation software. This position is best suited for someone with practical tax preparation experience, strong attention to detail, and an interest in applying tax knowledge in a software quality assurance environment.
The Tax Software Tester will enter tax return scenarios, review calculations and forms, identify discrepancies, and communicate findings to our software development team.
Tax knowledge is the primary qualification for this position. Prior software testing experience is helpful but not required.
Responsibilities- Prepare and review test returns using ’s tax software.
- Test federal and state tax forms, calculations, data flow, and software functionality.
- Compare software results with expected tax treatment, forms, and instructions.
- Identify calculation errors, missing forms, display issues, and unexpected software behavior.
- Clearly document issues so they can be reviewed by the software development team.
- Explain the expected tax result and provide supporting tax references when appropriate.
- Retest reported issues after software updates are completed.
- Assist with annual federal and state tax updates and release testing.
- Track assigned testing work and communicate progress, questions, and potential concerns.
- Work independently and collaborate with tax, development, support, and quality assurance personnel.
Qualified in-office employees may also assist with preparing tax returns for customers.
Qualifications Required- Tax preparation, tax review, tax support, tax accounting, or comparable tax experience.
- Familiarity with federal or state tax returns.
- Ability to recognize tax calculations or results that may be incorrect.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Strong computer and data-entry skills.
- Ability to clearly document and communicate issues.
- Ability to work independently, manage assignments, and meet deadlines.
- Ability to pass a background check.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents due to applicable government security requirements.
PreferredExperience in any of the following areas is helpful but not required:
- Form 1040 individual income tax returns
- Forms 1120 and 1120-S corporate tax returns
- Form 1065 partnership tax returns
- State individual or business tax returns
- Multi‑state or amended returns
- Professional tax preparation software
- Tax research or return review
- Software testing or quality assurance
Applicants are not expected to have experience with every return type. Broader federal, state, individual, or business tax experience is desirable and may qualify a candidate for more advanced testing assignments.
Tax‑related credentials, including CPA, Enrolled Agent, CTEC, or AFSP participation, are beneficial but not required.
Work Arrangements Full‑Time In‑OfficeThe primary position is full‑time and based in our Ventura, California office. In‑office employees work directly with our tax software development, support, and testing teams throughout the year.
Remote SeasonalRemote seasonal opportunities may be available for qualified tax professionals based on experience, availability, and business needs. Remote seasonal employees must be able to work independently, communicate effectively, and complete assignments within established deadlines.

Compensation$20.00–$32.00 per hour
Starting compensation will be based on tax preparation experience, return complexity, federal and state tax knowledge, professional credentials, and relevant software or testing experience.
