- Assistant Engineer – $93,242.66 – $ annually (DOQ).

The City of Ventura is seeking an energetic Engineer – Water/Wastewater to join the Public Works Department. In this role, you will support the planning, design, and delivery of capital improvement projects that maintain and enhance Ventura’s essential infrastructure. You will collaborate with engineers, consultants, and city staff, using tools such as Civil 3D, SharePoint, Trimble Unity Construct, and Workday to manage projects from design through construction.
Key Responsibilities- Plan, design, and deliver water and wastewater Capital Improvement Projects (CIPs), including pipelines, pump stations, lift stations, reservoirs, and treatment facilities.
- Prepare and review design reports, plans, specifications, estimates, and contracts for public works and utility projects.
- Serve as project manager or assistant project manager, monitoring scope, budget, and schedule through planning, design, and construction phases.
- Coordinate project permits, agreements, and activities with other departments, contractors, and government agencies.
- Conduct specialized technical studies, investigations, and research to support project design and delivery.
- Supervise and provide guidance to paraprofessional staff or consultants, as assigned.
- Respond to inquiries from residents, businesses, and stakeholders regarding public works and utility projects.
- Provide technical support to Ventura Water operations staff as needed.
- Collaborate with senior engineers while gaining experience toward professional licensure.
– Preferred Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have strong experience in water and wastewater infrastructure, including pump and lift stations, storage reservoirs, treatment plants and processes, water distribution and wastewater collection networks, pipelines (force and gravity mains), pump/motor controls or SCADA systems. They should be able to:
- Coordinate multiple projects effectively with strong technical and project management skills.
- Apply sound engineering judgment and problem‑solving to deliver practical, sustainable solutions.
- Communicate clearly with colleagues, consultants, contractors, regulatory agencies, and the public.
- Take initiative in planning, permitting, and coordinating projects across departments and with external stakeholders.
- Guide paraprofessional staff or consultants to ensure high‑quality, accurate project deliverables.
- Use design and project management tools such as Civil 3D, SharePoint, Trimble Unity Construct, and Workday.
- Commit to professional growth by learning from senior engineers, pursuing licensure, and supporting Ventura’s mission of reliable and resilient public utilities.
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, Traffic or Transportation Engineering, or a related field.
- Experience requirements:
- Assistant Engineer:
One year of professional engineering experience in the assigned area; a California Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate and two years of college may substitute for the Bachelor's Degree. - Associate Engineer:
Three years of professional engineering experience in the assigned area; or two years of experience equivalent to an Assistant Engineer with the City of Ventura. - Civil Engineer:
Three years of professional engineering experience in the assigned area; registration as a California Civil Engineer required at time of appointment.
- Assistant Engineer:
Depending on assignment, a valid California Class C driver’s license may be required.
- Assistant/Associate Engineer:
California Engineer in Training (EIT) certificate is highly desirable. - Civil Engineer:
Registration as a California Civil Engineer required at time of appointment.
