Overview
Position:
Planning Technician I/II – Resource Management Agency, Planning Division, Ventura County. Under immediate or general supervision, the Planning Technician performs tasks requiring knowledge of ordinances, laws, regulations, instruments, principles, practices, procedures, and programs in the Planning Division and performs related duties as required.

Approximate salaries:
Tech I‑Planning $25.96–36.25 per hour;
Tech II‑Planning $27.81–38.85 per hour.
- Provide general information to the public about projects, planning programs, applicable ordinances, policies, and procedures.
- Conduct research for special projects to assist professional staff in meeting project objectives.
- Prepare written reports, both statistical and narrative, with recommendations for achieving goals.
- Assist with the preparation for and delivery of public presentations to explain and clarify planning decisions.
- Perform other related duties as required.
Tech I‑Planning:
Some experience in land‑use planning or completion of six (6) months or more of experience in land‑use planning. A bachelor’s degree in urban planning or a related field may be substituted for up to twelve (12) months of experience applicable to Level I.
Tech II‑Planning:
Experience in land‑use planning at the level of journey tasks, with completion of twelve (12) months or more of experience at the Tech I‑Planning level or equivalent. A bachelor’s degree may be substituted for up to twelve (12) months of experience applicable to Level II.
Special Requirements
- Possession and maintenance of a valid California driver license.
- Effective time‑management and organizational skills.
- Ability to collect, interpret, and evaluate data.
- Ability to prepare clear and concise written reports.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with the public, providing excellent customer service.
- Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning or a related field.
- Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulations relative to planning and land use.
- Demonstrated public speaking skills.
Skills and Abilities
Some (I) to working (II) knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques related to urban and regional planning in a public sector environment, federal, state, and local laws and regulations, and map and plan reading including ArcGIS.
Skilled in public speaking and in collecting, interpreting, and evaluating data, preparing clear written reports, communicating orally and in writing, establishing relationships with the public, taking initiative for process improvement, and managing time within a fast‑paced environment.
Physical DemandsPrimarily indoor work with occasional travel to job sites, frequent public contact, requiring prolonged standing, walking, driving, climbing, crouching, kneeling, balancing, and keyboard entry.
