Job Description
The Database Admin Consultant will be a member of the Global Database Engineering team, which is responsible for supporting database operations for our managed hosting and managed services customers. You will be working on our ticketing tools to troubleshoot and resolve proactive and reactive incidents, create and execute change requests, work on other database requests from our customers, and troubleshoot recurring incidents through problems tickets.
You may also be expected to provide Tier 3/4 escalation support for Lumen Hosting Operations Engineers and customers in their MS‑SQL environment. You will be required to work closely with other DBAs in a global team as well as application, systems operations, and engineering teams.
- Good hands‑on technical knowledge of all running versions of Microsoft SQL Server database administration
- 7+ years of experience in SQL Server database administration/support in SQL Server production environments
- Good understanding of Managing Databases on Azure/AWS
- Working experience with SSRS (SQL Server Reporting Services) & SSIS (SQL Server Integration Services)
- Ability to troubleshoot MSSQL Server performance issues including server configuration, indexes, queries, and identifying network and disk related issues
- Implementation and troubleshooting knowledge of SQL Server security techniques such as TDE, SSL, Always‑Encrypted, etc.
- Implementing and supporting high availability and disaster recovery techniques offered by SQL Server including log shipping, replication, database mirroring and Always On, clustering
- Proficient in administration and management of hosted Windows computing environments
- Migration experience from Sybase database to MSSQL
- Good understanding of ITIL methodologies for change, incident, problem and request management
- Automate recurring database tasks
- Strong communication skills and customer‑support focused attitude
- Self‑starter who can work in mission‑critical environments with minimal supervision
- Basic Microsoft Windows Server administration experience
- Windows Server failover clustering knowledge
- Experience with scripting languages such as Power Shell, Python, Perl, VBScript, JavaScript, C#
- Understanding of various 3rd‑party database monitoring and administration tools
- Experience with third‑party backup and HA tools (SQLSafe, Lite Speed, Double Take, Wan Sync)
- Microsoft SQL Server certification
