Position Overview

As a Conventional Manual Machinist, you will be responsible for setting up and operating various manual machine tools to produce precision parts and instruments. You will work with a variety of materials including metals, plastics, and composites, transforming raw materials into finished products that meet exact specifications. This role requires a master craftsperson who understands the art and science of manual machining and can consistently deliver exceptional results.

Primary

Responsibilities
  • Set up and operate cylindrical grinders, Lathes, mills, jib bores, to produce precision ground surfaces on work pieces
  • Select appropriate grinding wheels based on material specifications and desired finish
  • Perform internal and external cylindrical grinding operations with tolerances to +/- 0.0001"
  • Dress and true grinding wheels to maintain optimal cutting performance
  • Monitor grinding operations to prevent thermal damage and maintain dimensional accuracy
  • Utilize precision measuring instruments to verify part dimensions throughout the grinding process
  • Set up and operate engine lathes and toolroom lathes for turning, facing, boring, and threading operations
  • Select and mount appropriate cutting tools, work-holding devices, and accessories
  • Calculate proper speeds, feeds, and depths of cut for various materials and operations
Production & Process Improvement
  • Analyze manufacturing processes and introduce changes that improve throughput, reduce cycle times, and increase overall efficiency.
  • Diagnose equipment problems, dimensional inconsistencies, and finish-quality concerns, involving the appropriate personnel when additional support is needed.
  • Work closely with quality/inspection, tooling, assembly, and sales teams to keep production aligned with customer delivery requirements.
  • Verify Bills of Material, work orders, and related job documentation to ensure all information is correct and complete prior to starting a job.
  • Keep production documentation current, including job travelers, required approvals, signoffs, and first-piece inspection records.
