MAINTENANCE WORKER I/II - WATER DISTRIBUTION OPERATOR I/II/III

Under general supervision, performs a variety of unskilled and semi‑skilled heavy manual work, alone or as a member of a crew, in the construction, maintenance, and repair of water systems, wastewater systems, storm drains, streets, graffiti abatement or related public works and utility functions. Incumbent may be required to work stand‑by on a rotational basis and report to work on a callback basis as needed within a designated time frame.
The current vacancies are in the Water Distribution section, but the Maintenance Worker I/II Eligibility List may be used to fill current and future vacancies in any section. When assigned to the Water System Section, positions are flexibly allocated up through the Water Distribution Operator I/II/III levels.

Works collaboratively with other team members and is open to new ideas - Holds a valid California Water Resources Control Board Water Distribution Operator certificate
Water – Assists in the installation, maintenance, repair and replacement of water mains and service connections, repairs leaks, assists in repairing, replacing and maintaining fire hydrants, maintains related facilities, shovels earth, concrete and mud debris, removes weeds, operates pneumatic tools, cleans and greases mechanical equipment, performs repairs on gate valves, chlorinates pipelines, tests hydraulic systems.
Wastewater – Inspects equipment at wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations, performs preventative maintenance and repair work, lubricates and repacks pumps and motors, cleans pumping station equipment, operates cutter unit, assists in repairing and maintaining gravity sewer pipe and pressure pipe.
Streets – Shovels earth or debris using hand tools, performs maintenance tasks, operates simple pneumatic tools, spreads and tamp paving material, loads and unloads trucks, cuts brush, removes weeds, cleans culverts, drains, ditches, maintains and repairs streets, sidewalks, curbs, lays rock base, mixes and pours concrete, assists in installation of street signs and traffic safety painting.
Facilities – Eradicates or removes graffiti, applies paint to buildings, fixtures or equipment, maintains equipment, operates mechanized equipment including scissor lifts, power washing, paint spray equipment, performs various maintenance tasks.
LICENSE / CERTIFICATESLicense Requirements (for all levels):
- Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required. Within 6 months of employment, incumbent must obtain and thereafter maintain a California Class A driver's license with the following endorsements/restrictions:
Water – Auto Transmission and Air Brakes Restrictions, no endorsement;
Wastewater – Auto Transmission and Air Brakes Restriction, Tanker endorsement (CWEA Wastewater Collection certification desirable);
Streets – Auto Transmission and Air Brakes Restrictions;
Facilities – Auto Transmission and Air Brakes Restrictions. - Certificates:
Water Distribution Operator I – valid California Water Resources Control Board Grade D1;
Operator II – valid Grade D2;
Operator III – valid Grade D3. - A pre‑employment medical examination is required before appointment. Drug testing is required pursuant to DOT regulations.
- Maintenance Worker I: 6 months of construction, maintenance, or related work experience.
- Maintenance Worker II: 18 months of related maintenance experience or one year as Maintenance Worker I.
- Water Distribution Operator I: 18 months of related maintenance experience or one year as MWI, plus valid Grade D1 certificate; formal training in confined space prevention, asbestos safe handling, traffic safety control, flagging highly desirable.
- Water Distribution Operator II: 18 months of related maintenance experience or one year as Operator I, plus valid Grade D2; formal training in confined space hazard prevention, asbestos safe handling, traffic safety control, flagging desirable.
- Water Distribution Operator III: valid Grade D3 certificate.
