Middle School Science Teacher/Team Member

Position: 100% FTE
The Sharon Academy Middle School (Grades 7-8) is seeking a qualified, full-time Science teacher. In addition to teaching an integrated, proficiency-based Science curriculum, this position includes being a student advisor and teaching an afternoon Specials class (Emotional, Social, Physical Curriculum).
Teaching QualificationsTeachers must hold a teaching license or be qualified, through education and/or experience, to teach the subject(s) for which they are hired to teach. Such qualifications must be approved by the Independent School Consultant at the Vermont Agency of Education.
Teaching Responsibilities- Teachers work according to the school calendar, including at least 175 teaching days, all scheduled in-service days, and school events as outlined below.
- Middle School teaching staff must make themselves available to students and families before and after school, between 7:45 am‑3:45 pm. Teachers working less than full time should be available for apportioned and appropriate amounts of time.
- Full‑time teachers (100% FTE) teach Morning Block Classes (65%) and afternoon specials (25%) and serve as advisors/assist with daily duties (10%).
- Assist with daily staff duties including opening the school on their designated day, supervising lunch and recess, serving as a crossing guard, and managing study halls.
- Participate in overnight experiential field trips to be determined annually.
- Participate in the two‑week Circus Interim program at least to the contracted percentage, excluding hourly employees. For 100% FTE this will include extended days for planning, set‑up, and performances. These extended days are offset by a canceled day of school the Monday following the circus.
- Help plan and participate in TSA Middle School Orientation Week: involves some summer communication before TSA August Inservice Days.
- Employ innovative, proficiency‑based practices of teaching and assessment.
- Write Report Card comments 3× per year.
- Support the continuity of learning in all platforms.
- Update the learning management system, keep grade data current to within two weeks, comment on student progress regularly.
- Update course syllabus and class description (for Program of Studies) before the end of each school year.
- Stay up to date on current 504s, Individual Education Plans (IEP), and special needs and accommodations of relevant students; adjust curriculum, teaching and assignments accordingly.
- Full‑time MS Faculty serve as advisor.
- Arrange and attend advisee conferences with students and parents as necessary, at least twice per year.
- Communicate regularly with advisees, their families and other teachers.
- Provide appropriate levels of social/emotional support, refer to School Counselor when needed.
- Write and deliver student introduction speeches for 8th grade graduation.
- Attend student support meetings to develop or revise student plans as needed.
- Communicate regularly with parents; meeting as necessary.
- All Faculty are mandatory reporters as required by the state of Vermont.
Support the mission of The Sharon Academy. Attend Middle School events. Teachers are required to attend: beginning of the year potluck, open house presentation evenings, the Circus, Science Fair, all‑school field trips, a minimum of one school dance, and MS graduation.
Non‑teaching time (before school, after school, and during breaks) outside of scheduled class/prep times will involve work that supports the mission of The Sharon Academy including: student monitoring, tutoring, club leadership and conferencing.
