Instructional Coach – Springfield School District, Elm Hill School, Springfield, Vermont

Enhance instructional practices at the classroom level and raise the level of student achievement by planning and providing job‑embedded and ongoing professional development for teachers, supporting the Principal in data analysis and decision‑making, and guiding teachers to improve their content knowledge and instructional strategies.

Responsibilities
  • Act as part of the school’s leadership team, providing job‑embedded and ongoing assistance for teachers.
  • Support the Principal in data analysis and professional development decision‑making.
  • Guide teachers to improve their content knowledge and instructional strategies.
  • Build the capacity of the school and its teachers to meet student learning needs.
  • Work primarily in classrooms with teachers (modeling, observing, co‑teaching).
  • Lead analysis and utilization of student achievement data to inform instructional decisions.
  • Assist teachers in administering and interpreting assessment tools.
  • Facilitate teacher study groups to analyze student work, lesson plans, and plan for instructional strategy enhancement.
  • Participate in all required coaching professional development to acquire essential skills and strategies.
  • Know current and past research in appropriate content areas and pedagogies relevant to coaching.
  • Identify school teaching and learning needs, barriers, and weaknesses by analyzing student data and implement problem‑solving actions.
  • Facilitate high‑quality professional development, including in‑class coaching, observing, modeling, guiding analysis of student work, developing lesson plans, supporting data analysis, technology integration, and co‑planning with teachers.
  • Monitor instructional effectiveness and student progress using tools gained through assistance with classroom duties.
  • Build and maintain confidential relationships with teachers to foster trust.
  • Participate productively in staff meetings and professional committees.
  • Attend scheduled in‑service days and use discretion in discussing school affairs.
  • Align with the district’s strategic plan, school improvement action plans, and instructional objectives.
  • Comply with board, administrative policies, regulations, and procedures, reinforcing student compliance.
  • Prepare or complete appropriate reports and paperwork, including those required by VTDOE.
  • Adhere to attendance requirements and all district policies and state regulations.
  • Perform other tasks and duties as appropriate and/or assigned.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree with concentration in reading and/or mathematics education.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of successful classroom teaching.
  • Advanced fluency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing; exceptional reading and writing skills in English.
  • Ability to diagnose student misconceptions, articulate mathematical reasoning, and connect concrete representations to abstract concepts.
  • Ability to apply common‐sense understanding to carry out detailed written or oral instructions.
  • High‑level interpersonal and group communication skills; ability to work cooperatively with students, faculty, administrators, parents, and outside agencies.
  • Strong knowledge base of theoretical research pertinent to instructional best practices.
  • Proficiency in computers/technology applications (word processing, spreadsheets, email, internet, integration, presentations, research).
  • Familiarity with laws and regulations governing education in Vermont.
  • Profound knowledge of inquiry‑based and problem‑based pedagogy and other 21st‑century best‑practice strategies.
  • Strong work ethic, self‑directed, self‑motivated.
  • Significant experience in secondary whole‑school reform.

Compensation

$52,550 to $89,388 annually, based on experience and qualifications.
