Job SummaryThe General Education teacher designs and delivers individualized instruction for students with diverse academic, behavioral, and emotional needs in an alternative setting. This role combines academic instruction, meeting facilitation, and executive functioning coaching to help students achieve high school graduation, complete online coursework, or earn a Lake Region Degree through GED programming and elective course work.
Core Responsibilities- Coordinate, schedule, and lead comprehensive annual reviews, initial eligibility determinations, and manifestation determination meetings.
- Manage communication and collaborative decision‑making among general educators, alternative program staff, mental health providers, parents, and administrative representatives.
- Act as a neutral, professional moderator to guide teams through differences in perspective regarding accommodations and service delivery models.
- Grade student work promptly and input data into the student information system.
- GED Instruction:
Provide targeted tutoring and curriculum support to prepare students for all sections of the GED exam. - Online Learning Facilitation:
Guide and monitor students completing asynchronous coursework through the Vermont Virtual Learning Cooperative (VTVLC). - Skill Remediation:
Adapt core academic materials to match individual student reading and math levels. - Elective Coordination:
Monitor progress, grade assignments, and maintain compliance records for non‑traditional alternative PE and Art courses.
- Executive Functioning:
Teach actionable organization, time management, and study skills to foster independent learning. - Emotional Support:
Recognize behavioral triggers and proactively guide students to access available on‑site or community mental health supports. - Crisis De‑escalation:
Implement trauma‑informed strategies to manage behavioral challenges within the classroom.

Job Requirements- This position requires a Vermont Teaching License. Vermont licensure requires a minimum of a bachelor’s degree.

Bachelor’s degree in Special Education or a related field. - Licensure:
Valid State Teaching License with a Special Education endorsement. - Software Familiarity:
Prior experience using Docu Sped or an equivalent electronic IEP documentation system. - Expertise:
Familiarity with alternative pathways to graduation (GED, proficiency‑based graduation requirements).

Experience navigating the VTVLC platform or similar learning management systems. - Environment:
Two or more years of experience working with at‑risk youth or in an alternative school setting.

- At least 2 years of relevant experience preferred.
