Job Description

Preschool Paraprofessionals/Teaching Assistants are responsible for assisting each classroom with the care, education, and supervision of a diverse population of young children, ages 3-5. This position acts as a support for the Classroom Teachers in both planned and free play activity times. In addition, the Preschool Paraprofessional/Teaching Assistant is responsible for the supervision of children during essential arts, meal times and rest time, and outdoor play.

The position also requires that the individual in this role ensures that Vermont Center-Based Child Care and Preschool Program Child Care Licensing regulations are maintained across all routines and daily activities.

This position is expected to assist the classrooms with maintaining a warm and nurturing relationship with each child, supporting an environment that stimulates curiosity and celebrates diversity, and participating in a dynamic, child-centered curriculum that is grounded in hands‑on exploration and play.

Preschool Paraprofessionals/Teaching Assistants are hired in a full‑time capacity, 7.5/day for 178 days during the school year.

Job Requirements
  • Teacher Associate

    Qualifications:

    • At least 20 years of age, high school graduate or GED
    • At least a Vermont Early Childhood Career Ladder Level Three certificate
    • Or at least an associate degree from an accredited college with a major or concentration in Early Childhood, Child or Human Development, Elementary Education, or Child and Family Services and at least 12 months experience working with groups of children from grade three or younger
    • Or at least a Certificate of Completion from the Registered Child Care Apprenticeship Program
    • Or at least a Child Care Certificate from the Community College of Vermont and at least 12 months experience working with groups of children from grade three or younger
    • Or at least 21 college credits with an early childhood or school age focus and at least 12 months experience working with groups of children from grade three or younger
  • Teacher Assistant

    Qualifications:

    • At least 18 years of age, high school graduate or GED
    • At least a Vermont Early Childhood Career Ladder Level One or Two certificate
    • Or at least a current CDA
  • Essential Daily Duties:
    • Assist the classroom and teachers to ensure that the classroom is run smoothly and that individual, daily needs of both children and families are met.
    • Supervision of children at all times when in the classroom or outside – including, but not limited to, during meal times, rest time, and free play.
    • Assist children with toileting routines and proper hand washing.
    • Maintain an open, friendly, and cooperative relationship with each child.
    • Assist in the implementation of daily lesson plans and projects.
    • Assist with walking or traveling field trips.
    • Maintain orderliness of classrooms, playground, and materials daily.
    • Inspect the school site and equipment for potential safety hazards; take corrective action or inform the Principal or Director to prevent injuries.
    • Be aware of all times of health and safety concerns for children in your care and follow the Mandated Reporter Policy as required.
    • Comply with all Vermont Early Childhood Education Licensing regulations and Caledonia Central Supervisory Union Early Childhood Program Handbook and Walden School Staff Handbook.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Safely lift young children up to 30 pounds.
    • Bend, stoop, and kneel to children’s level.
    • Sit on the floor and small chairs.
    • Stand for extended periods of time.
    • Withstand periods of time in the cold and heat outside.
  • Preferred Experience and Credentials:
    • Preferred experience in early childhood education, elementary education, social work, nursing (pediatrics), psychology, or physical education.
    • Undergraduate credits in child development and/or willingness to complete the Fundamentals Course within first year of employment.
    • Fingerprinting for Supervisory Union employment.
    • Fingerprinting through the Child Development Division (CDD).
  • At least 1 year(s) of relevant experience preferred.
  • Associate degree preferred.
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required.
