Substitute School Nurse
Reports to Principal and Assistant Principal FLSA Status:
Non-Exempt
Position Objective
The Substitute Nurse provides instructional continuity for students in the absence of the Nurse. The substitute ensures that students can continue their learning smoothly and that the educational program proceeds effectively.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Planning and Preparation
- Review substitute instructions.
- Consult with building principal, department head, or team leader when clarification is needed.
- Implement the teaching plan prepared by the absent teacher.
Learning Environment
- Promote a respectful and safe classroom environment.
- Ensure student behavior is monitored and appropriately managed.
- Follow school-wide procedures and policies consistently.
Instruction
- Deliver instruction as outlined in lesson plans, adapting as needed to support student engagement.
- Respond effectively to student questions and needs during the day.
- Provide clear directions and facilitate learning according to established plans.
Other Professional Responsibilities
- Complete written reports at the end of the day/period using forms provided in the substitute folder.
- Communicate effectively with school administrators and colleagues regarding classroom events.
- Follow professional and ethical standards consistent with the HUUSD expectations for all teaching staff.
Supervision
- Reports to the building principal or department head.
Qualifications
Education/Experience/Licenses
Must meet at least one of the following:
Skills and Abilities
- Language
Skills:
Read and interpret lesson plans, safety rules, instructions; write reports; speak effectively to students and staff. - Computer
Skills:
Familiarity with word processing and database software preferred. - Reasoning/Problem-Solving:
Ability to solve practical problems and respond to a variety of classroom situations. - Communication & Interpersonal
Skills:
Communicate courteously, effectively, and respectfully with students, staff, parents, and outside agencies. Work cooperatively and professionally. - Satisfactory criminal background and reference checks required.
Physical Effort and Stress
- Frequently:
Stand, walk, sit, talk, hear, use hands/fingers. - Occasionally:
Reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, lift/move up to 50 pounds. - Regularly handle stressful situations and respond to student behavior.
Working Conditions
- Occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions, including extreme cold.
- Work environments typically moderate in noise, including classrooms, offices, and school-wide spaces.
