Job SummaryA Special Education Teacher’s role is to educate students who require additional support outside of the traditional classroom. They work with many different types of children, from those who are physically disabled or sensory impaired to those with speech difficulties or autism. They adapt or modify general education lessons to meet students’ abilities and needs. A Pre‑Primary & Primary School Special Education Teacher may also teach basic skills to students and create materials that support the child’s social development as well as academics.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesTypical responsibilities include providing small‑group instruction, writing and delivering lesson plans, assessing student work, and collaborating with other teachers to ensure students’ needs are met. Additional details are provided below.
- Developmental stages, social development, language development, physical development, readiness to learn
- Individualized Education Plans (IEPs): develop and implement IEPs for students with special needs, outlining specific goals and strategies.
- Differentiated Instruction: modify curriculum and teaching methods to meet diverse learning needs and design a comprehensive standards‑based instructional program.
- Collaboration:
work closely with general education teachers, support staff, and parents to create an inclusive learning environment; act as case manager for assigned students. - Assessment and Progress Monitoring: conduct assessments, identify strengths and challenges, and monitor progress to adjust strategies. Familiarity with Vermont assessment tools is required.
- Behavioral Support: provide behavior‑management strategies, implement behavior plans, and participate in manifestation demonstrations as necessary.
- Adapted Materials: create or adapt instructional materials for individual needs.
- Communication: maintain open and regular communication with parents, discuss progress, and schedule required IEP meetings.
- Professional Development: stay informed about current special education practices and attend workshops.
- Advocacy: advocate for the needs and rights of students with special needs within the school community.
- Record Keeping: prepare reports and maintain necessary educational records.
- Establish and maintain a safe, orderly, child‑centered classroom environment.
- Perform other duties normally required of certificated employees as adjunct to the regular teaching assignment.
- Build relationships with administrators, teachers, district staff, and classified personnel.
- Exercise initiative and mature judgment.
- Communicate effectively orally and in written form; facilitate problem solving with diverse educators.
- Prepare teaching materials and reports (grade, attendance, anecdotal records, etc.) for instructional plans.
Reports to, receives daily work assignments, and is evaluated by the Principal.

Qualification Requirements- Education and Experience: A/B.S. degree in Special Education or related field;
Vermont teaching endorsement and state certification in Special Education. Knowledge of special education laws and regulations. - Language
Skills:
Ability to read and write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. - Mathematical
Skills:
Basic math, including percentages, proportions, averages, and algebra. - Reasoning Ability: Apply common sense to carry out detailed written or oral instructions; solve problems with a few concrete variables.

Resolve conflicts and communicate courteously with students, parents, staff, and outside organizations. - Other
