Overview
Assistant Professor in Italian, Middlebury College, Middlebury, VT. The Department of Italian invites applicants for a tenure-track position in Italian beginning Fall 2027. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to excellence in Italian language teaching and a Ph.D. They must be able to teach courses in both Italian and English, including language courses and literature/culture courses at all undergraduate levels in Italian.
Research specialization is open, with preference for topics such as contemporary Italian culture and politics, immigration, representation, identity, and colonialism that may contribute to interdisciplinary programs such as Black Studies and/or Comparative Literature. The candidate is expected to teach two courses per semester and one Winter Term every other year.
As part of a full teaching load, the candidate will regularly contribute to Middlebury’s First Year Seminar Program and Winter Term course offerings. All faculty are expected to contribute to service to the College, including committee work and serving as Director or Chair of a program or Department when asked.

- Contribute to Middlebury’s First Year Seminar Program and Winter Term course offerings.
- Engage in service activities for the College, including committee membership and leadership roles when requested.
- Ph.D. in Italian or a closely related field.
- Ability to teach courses in both Italian and English; experience with language instruction and literature/culture courses at the undergraduate level.
- Research specialization is open; preference for topics aligning with interdisciplinary programs (e.g., Black Studies, Comparative Literature).
- Submit a letter of application addressing pedagogical approach, prior college-level Italian teaching experience, and research interests (focus on content courses in English you would teach).
