Position Summary

Brookhaven Treatment & Learning Center is a state-approved independent therapeutic school serving students in grades K–10 with complex educational, behavioral, emotional, and mental health needs. Through individualized instruction integrated with therapeutic, residential, and clinical services, Brookhaven provides students with the opportunity to achieve academic success while developing the skills necessary to thrive both in school and beyond.

Brookhaven is seeking a compassionate, collaborative, and highly skilled Licensed Vermont Special Educator to join our multidisciplinary educational team. The successful candidate will provide specialized instruction, educational case management, and collaborative leadership while helping students achieve meaningful academic, behavioral, and social-emotional growth.

Position Purpose

The Licensed Special Educator is responsible for providing specialized instruction and educational case management for students receiving special education services. Working collaboratively with educators, clinicians, residential staff, families, and sending school districts, the Special Educator develops, implements, coordinates, and evaluates individualized educational programming while ensuring compliance with all applicable federal and Vermont special education requirements.

Essential Responsibilities Case Management & Compliance
  • Serve as the educational case manager for assigned students.
  • Develop, implement, monitor, and revise Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in accordance with IDEA and Vermont Special Education Regulations.
  • Develop transition plans, behavior support plans, and Extended School Year (ESY) services, as appropriate.
  • Schedule and facilitate annual reviews, eligibility meetings, reevaluations, manifestation determinations, transition meetings, and other required special education meetings.
  • Coordinate educational services with families, sending school districts, community agencies, outside providers, and multidisciplinary team members.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and timely educational records and documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable federal, state, and Brookhaven policies, procedures, timelines, and reporting requirements.
Assessment & Evaluation
  • Coordinate and participate in the special education evaluation and eligibility process.
  • Conduct educational assessments and contribute to multidisciplinary evaluations.
  • Interpret educational assessment data to identify student strengths, educational needs, and appropriate instructional supports.
  • Utilize ongoing progress monitoring and data collection to evaluate student performance and guide instructional decisions.
  • Assist in preparing alternate assessments and other required state reporting, when applicable.
Instruction
  • Deliver individualized, small-group, and classroom instruction utilizing evidence-based instructional practices.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet each student's academic, behavioral, developmental, and social-emotional needs.
  • Develop and adapt curriculum, instructional materials, accommodations, modifications, and assessments aligned with the Vermont Framework of Standards and Learning Opportunities.
  • Implement evidence-based interventions in literacy, mathematics, written language, executive functioning, and social skills.
  • Integrate assistive technology and adaptive instructional supports when appropriate.
  • Foster student engagement, independence, self-advocacy, confidence, and lifelong learning.
Therapeutic Collaboration
  • Collaborate closely with clinicians, residential staff, administrators, classroom teachers, content specialists, and families to support each student's educational and therapeutic goals.
  • Promote consistency between educational programming, behavioral supports, and therapeutic interventions across the school day.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor individualized behavior support plans in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.
  • Utilize trauma-informed educational practices and positive behavioral interventions.
  • Participate in crisis prevention, de-escalation, and therapeutic interventions consistent with Brookhaven policies and required training.
  • Foster a safe, structured, respectful, and emotionally supportive learning environment.
Communication & Professional Collaboration
  • Schedule and facilitate IEP meetings and communicate regularly with parents, guardians, sending school districts, and outside agencies.
  • Coordinate educational transitions into, within, and beyond Brookhaven.
  • Consult with classroom teachers, content specialists, and educational assistants regarding accommodations, instructional strategies, disabilities, behavior supports, and evidence-based instructional practices.
