Assistant Professor of Modern Chinese Language, Literature, and Culture, Middlebury College, MIDDLEBURY, VT
The Greenberg-Starr Department of Chinese invites applicants for atenure-track position in modern Chinese language, literature, andculture beginning fall 2027. Candidates may be specialists in anygenre of modern Chinese literature or other form of Chinesecultural production, including poetry, prose, and drama, as well astopical courses not confined to a single historical period, withpriority given to candidates whose first area of expertise is theliterature and culture of the People's Republic of China, including that of the 21st century.
Candidates with experience and demonstrated success teaching Chinese language, literature, andculture to undergraduate students are especially encouraged toapply. Applicants must have the Ph.D. in hand or expected by September 2027. Appointment is at the rank of Assistant Professor.
Candidates must be committed to high quality undergraduate education, including language education and the mentoring of adiverse student population, and they also must be willing todedicate themselves to participation in a department with atradition of teamwork and team teaching. The successful candidate must have native or near-native proficiency in Modern Standard Chinese (“Mandarin”) and English and be eager to teach both Chineselanguage courses and courses in English on Chinese literature andculture.
The typical teaching load will be 2 fall semester course sand 2 spring semester courses plus 1 Winter Term course in every other year, with Winter Term off in the alternate year,
As part of a full teaching load, the candidate will also regularlycontribute to Middlebury's First Year Seminar Program and Winter Term course offerings. All faculty at Middlebury are also expected to contribute to service to the College including, but not limitedto, committee membership and serving as Director or Chair of aProgram or Department when asked.
