Overview

The Vermont Department of Health (VDH) is eager to hire a Public Health Analyst II in the Research, Epidemiology and Evaluation Unit of the Public Health Statistics Section, Health Surveillance Division. The position requires understanding and analysis of data for chronic disease conditions and public health concerns, and the management and maintenance of internal data systems as well as systems for data distribution and promotion.

Full‑time, and requires in‑person workdays in Waterbury, VT as part of a hybrid work schedule. Travel to Health District Offices within Vermont is required. As of July 12, 2026, the step 1 rate for pay grade 25 will be $31.54 per hour and the step 15 rate will be $49.45 per hour.

Responsibilities

The position is expected to provide analysis and interpretation of data; prepare and present material to local health offices; consult with local health offices on data needs; respond to internal and external data requests; track population health and performance management data; create and maintain dashboards for displaying population health data; provide technical assistance on preparing data for display; write data products;

and maintain sub‑state, web‑based data reporting. The position will also assist with the preparation of special surveys and studies including statewide plans and reports, as well as perform other related duties as required.

This position supports VDH's Offices of Local Health to assist with their data needs, serving as the data liaison to local health staff, providing technical assistance on VDH data, reporting and dissemination. This position also supports the Department of Health's Planning Unit with data‑related needs that support the Department, the Agency of Human Services, and statewide initiatives. The analyst will work with Planning and other program staff to support the use of high‑quality health outcome indicators across plans and programs such as the State Health Improvement Plan and Healthy Vermonters 2030.

The position operates under the Research, Epidemiology and Evaluation Unit Chief and the Epidemiology and Surveillance Team Lead. All analysts are expected to work on multiple teams, including the Unit, the Surveillance Epi team, District Office teams and special topic work groups.

Expertise in Microsoft Office, statistical analysis software (R, Python, SAS, etc.), workflow automation, and data visualization software (PowerBI, Tableau) is required. Extensive contact with community partners, VDH program staff and systems developers will also be required.

Environmental Factors

Duties are performed primarily in a standard office setting. Meetings with data users and providers may require some travel, for which private means of transportation must be available. Some work outside of normal office hours may be required.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master's degree or higher in biostatistics, epidemiology, public health or a social science discipline, including 6 credits in statistics at the graduate level AND one (1) year or more of professional‑level work in research, statistics, informatics or program evaluation where the activities include gathering, analyzing and interpreting statistical data.
  • Bachelor's degree in statistics, a health‑related or social science discipline, including 12 college credits in statistics, research or computer sciences, and 6 of these credits must be in statistics AND two (2) years or more of professional‑level work in research, statistics, informatics or program evaluation where the activities include gathering, analyzing and interpreting statistical data.
