Job Summary
: $10,000 financial award to be put towards a Certified Surgical Technologist Program/Associated Degree in Surgical Technology. Two‑year BMH employment required after successful completion of Program/Certification.

Scholarship Offering

Surgical technologists are health professionals integral to the surgical care team. They work under the supervision of a surgeon, ensuring the OR environment is safe, equipment functions properly, and procedures are conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. They possess expertise in sterile and aseptic technique and combine knowledge of anatomy, surgical procedures, and technology to support physicians.

Department Scope of Service

Perioperative Services includes the Operating Room (OR), Post‑Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Ambulatory Care Unit (ACU), Endoscopy, Minor Procedures, and Sterile Processing Department. Patients are cared for from 10 months through end of life. General surgery, limited vascular, thoracic, OB/GYN, orthopedic, urology, dental, ophthalmology, and podiatry are performed in the three rooms. Holmium laser, greenlight laser, and ESWL are provided via outside contract services.

Cesarean sections are performed in the Birthing Center OR.

Staff includes Registered Nurses, Surgical Tech/LPN, Surgical Technologist‑Endoscopy, Surgical Technologists, an Anesthesia Tech, Materials Specialist, Scheduler/Staffing Coordinator, Sterile Processing Technicians, a Unit Secretary/LNA, Workflow Coordinator, Unit Secretary, and a Director of Perioperative Services.

Operating Room Schedule

The OR operates 24 hrs a day, each day of the year for patients aged ten months until end of life. Elective schedule: 7:00 am – 3:30 pm. Predictable start times and admissions are established by the Director or designee.

PACU and Sterile Processing

The PACU provides immediate preoperative care, reassessment, admission/discharge of select ACU patients, and intensive observation following operative procedures. Sterile Processing decontaminates instruments and equipment for the OR and nursing units.

ACU

The ACU includes Endoscopy and the Minor Procedures Room, caring for surgical/medical patients and providing pre‑ and postoperative care and education. Patients undergoing minor procedures and endoscopy with moderate sedation/analgesia receive care here.

Preoperative Screening

A staffed area of Registered Nurses, Workflow Coordinator, and Unit Secretary conducts pre‑op interviews, consults, reviews test results, and follows anesthesia guidelines to assure proper patient assessment and preparation.

Job Requirements Qualifications
  • Education: High school graduate or equivalent. Completion of a surgical technology course, certificate program, or comparable experience required.
  • Experience: Recent OR scrub experience required.
  • Licensure/Certification: Certification from Association of Surgical Technologists preferred.
  • CPR: Required.
  • Mental Efforts: Requires eye/hand coordination and manual dexterity; normal or corrected vision/hearing; assistance with lifting/moving patients.
