Overview

The Senior Environmental Health Risk Assessor works within the Vermont Department of Health’s Division of Environmental Health’s Toxicology Group. The responsibilities of the job are focused on human health risk assessment and related issues. This position is the State's scientific expert on human health risk from chemical exposures. The senior human health risk assessor works with the State Toxicologist and technical staff to develop health-based risk levels for chemicals in air, water, soil and food.

The senior human health risk assessor provides guidance to the public and partner organizations on appropriate limits for environmental chemical exposures. The individual may work on topics such as determining acceptable risk levels for volatile chemicals in indoor air, providing or critically reviewing human health risk assessments for contaminated sites, advising on health-based levels for PFAS and other contaminants in drinking water, responding to chemical emergencies, reviewing applications for pesticide use and developing advisories for fish consumption.

This is a hybrid position with the office located in Waterbury, Vermont.

Duties are performed primarily in a standard office setting. Some travel may be required to attend public meetings and hearings, for which private means of transportation must be available. At meetings and hearings, strongly conflicting and emotional opinions may be encountered. Some stress may arise from the need to render quick decisions in health emergencies.

Minimum Qualifications

Education:

Master's Degree in a biological, environmental or chemical science.
