Overview
The Vermont Rural Learning Collective (VRLC) places Ameri Corps members at nonprofit host sites in Vermont’s most rural communities. Members expand access to education, strengthen conservation and food security efforts, and engage local residents through hands-on programs. Service activities may include creating and leading educational programs, recruiting volunteers, supporting community outreach, maintaining gardens and trails, and coordinating food access initiatives. VRLC is a learn-by-doing program that provides members with personalized service experiences, training, networking, and professional development to support their educational and career goals.
This position is based at the Vermont Farmers Food Center (VFFC) in Rutland, VT, with occasional service at partner farms in Rutland County. VFFC strengthens the local food system by running food access programs, farm-based educational opportunities, and wholesale food distribution to support the community. As a member, you’ll contribute to food access and education initiatives that connect farms, families, and community partners, while developing valuable skills in program delivery, communications, and nonprofit operations.
You will be supervised and supported by VFFC’s Program Director.
- At least 17 years old
- High school diploma/equivalent, or commitment to earn one before using the education award
- U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or lawful permanent resident
- Able to pass the National Service Criminal History Check, as well as Vermont AHS Child Protection and Adult Abuse Registry checks
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with openness and empathy for individuals experiencing food insecurity
- Interest in food systems and local agriculture (all knowledge levels welcome)
- Ability to serve in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
- Basic computer skills (Excel, PowerPoint)
- Personal transportation to the Rutland host site
- As a member at Vermont Farmers Food Center, you’ll support food access, community health, and education initiatives.
- You will attend local meetings with healthcare providers, farmers, and partners focused on food justice and preventative health.
- With staff and volunteers, you’ll help implement evaluation tools, coordinate volunteers, and support produce distribution through food access and bulk purchasing programs.
- Key duties include driving produce, bagging food with community volunteers, and assisting with Farmacy program enrollment.
- You’ll also help plan and deliver farm-based education programs, create newsletters with nutrition and recipe content, and assist with food demos and art activities on pick-up days.
- Additional tasks may include follow-up with participants, supporting drop-offs, and contributing to community events.
- Members also complete Ameri Corps requirements and may be called on to support disaster response efforts.
