Overview
Northeast Correctional Facility in St. Johnsbury is looking for a Facility Shift Supervisor. You will oversee daily operations and staff during their assigned shift, ensuring the safety and security of the public, staff and inmates by enforcing policies, conducting inspections, managing inmate movements and counts, resolving conflicts, and responding to emergencies.
Key responsibilities include:
- Supervising and training correctional officers
- Maintaining inmate records and facility logs
- Coordinating inmate intake and housing, and preparing reports
This role requires strong leadership, decision‑making skills, and the ability to manage high‑stress situations effectively. Due to shift and post bidding, this position could be placed on any shift depending upon seniority.

Environmental FactorsDuties are performed largely within a correctional facility and in daily contact with inmates. High stress situations are predictable, even frequent. The potential for physical assault or injury is present. Transportation and supervision of inmates outside of the correctional facility may be required. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required. Overtime and emergency duty are predictable. Shift assignments may change in accordance with the needs of the facility.
Minimum QualificationsBachelor's degree or higher AND two (2) or more years of work experience INCLUDING one (1) year in a correctional institution involving the custody of inmates.
OR
Associates degree AND four (4) or more years of work experience INCLUDING three (3) years in a correctional institution involving the custody of inmates.
OR
High school diploma or equivalent AND five (5) or more years of work experience, INCLUDING three (3) years in a correctional institution involving the custody of inmates.
OR
Four (4) or more years of military experience AND one (1) or more years in a correctional system involving the custody of inmates.
Preferred QualificationsSupervisory experience in direct client contact in a residential facility or law enforcement.
Special RequirementsCandidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position. In accordance with AHS Policy 4.02, Hiring Standards, Vermont and/or national criminal record checks, as well as DMV and adult and child abuse registry checks, as appropriate to the position under recruitment, will be conducted on candidates, with the exception of those who are current classified state employees seeking transfer, promotion or demotion into an AHS classified position or are persons exercising re‑employment (RIF) rights.
