Transportation Operations Technician - Temporary

Overview

The Agency of Transportation is seeking temporary Transportation Operations Technicians in Wilmington. This position will be responsible for various tasks related to highway maintenance, such as repairing guardrails, cutting trees and brush, patching roads, picking litter, ditching, and more. Positions are anticipated to work 40 hours per week for approximately six months.

Temporary work is typically for variable hours and is not expected to be full-time. The State does not guarantee 40 hours of work per week. Duties require working in extreme outdoor weather conditions. Employees may be required to report to work outside of their area or work schedule and must be reachable by phone. Hazards are present when work is performed near heavy equipment, hazardous materials, and roadside litter. Employees may be exposed to blood and airborne pathogens. Ongoing hazards occur when working on the roads as traffic passes and during emergencies such as floods, ice, snow, or hazardous material incidents.

An incumbent must be able to use tools and equipment commonly used for maintenance work and lift materials commonly used in maintenance work. Participation in a random drug and alcohol‑testing program is required prior to operation of vehicles or equipment. Considerable overtime work is required, particularly during the winter months, and is considered a condition of employment.

No education or experience required. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.

High school diploma or equivalent.

A valid driver's license is required. An incumbent must live within reasonable proximity of the assigned workstation. Possession of a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is required for successful completion of the original probation. An incumbent must complete all VTTC required coursework within six (6) months or be enrolled.
