About the Work

Fairbanks Mill specializes in hydroelectric projects ranging from 50 kW to 50 MW. Our work includes turbine overhauls, bearing replacements, alignment, rigging, and long‑term maintenance of hydro plants that are built to last decades.

This is not factory floor work. You’ll be working in real powerhouses on Francis, Kaplan, and vertical units alongside experienced millwrights who respect precision, safety, and doing it right the first time.

Responsibilities
  • Install, inspect, and overhaul hydro turbine and generator components
  • Set and align rotating equipment (vertical & horizontal units)
  • Bearing installation and setup (guide, thrust, and wicket‑related components)
  • Precision measurements using dial indicators, micrometers, levels, and alignment tools
  • Rigging and setting heavy components safely and accurately
  • Assist with commissioning, startup, and troubleshooting
  • Follow lock‑out/tag‑out and powerhouse safety procedures
  • Document work performed (measurements, photos, as‑built conditions)
Required Experience
  • Millwright experience with rotating equipment (industrial, power generation, or hydro preferred)
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail
  • Comfortable working around heavy equipment and tight tolerances
  • Ability to read drawings and follow technical procedures
  • Willingness to travel to job sites in New England
  • Reliable, professional, and able to work as part of a small, skilled crew
Preferred (Not Required)
  • Hydroelectric turbine experience (Francis, Kaplan, Pelton)
  • Vertical unit bearing and alignment experience
  • Laser or traditional alignment experience
  • Rigging certifications
  • Welding or machining experience
What We Offer
  • Interesting, specialized work that isn’t repetitive
  • Clean, organized job sites compared to typical industrial work
  • Competitive pay based on skill and experience
  • Travel pay and per diem (when applicable)
  • Long‑term opportunities with a small, respected hydro contractor
  • Work that leaves infrastructure better than you found it
