JOB TITLE: Engineering Technician III DEPARTMENT: Engineering GRADE:
FLSA STATUS: 11 Non-Exempt
REPORTS TO: Director of Engineering
GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK:Performs responsible professional work preparing plans for capital improvement projects using computer aided design. Direction is provided by the Director of Engineering and the Chief of Design.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:(These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)
- Performs office and field work necessary to complete preliminary and final engineering for various projects.
- Prepares engineering designs and construction documents for capital improvement projects using computer aided design (AutoCAD / Civil 3D) and other design methods.
- Maintains and may administer the computer aided design drafting system.
- Performs engineering calculations for roads, structures, and other capital improvement plan projects.
- Maintains files and related engineering documents.
- Assists in the development and/or review of construction work plans, as-built drawings, survey data, and other related work elements as necessary to ensure compliance with standards.
- Prepares preliminary construction cost estimates and bid specifications.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Knowledge of modern principles and practices of civil engineering and/or architecture; general knowledge of design, construction, and maintenance relating to capital improvement projects; general knowledge of land surveying, traffic engineering, stormwater management, and/or building standards; ability to read and interpret plans; ability to maintain accurate records; ability to prepare reports; ability to communicate ideas effectively both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and general public;
Microsoft Office and computer aided design (CAD) software experience required;
AutoCAD Civil 3D experience desired.
Graduation from an accredited community college with major course work in engineering technology, architectural technology, or related field; 2 years’ experience in engineering and/or construction related projects desirable.
A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels;
