REPORTS TO: Section Supervisor
Responsible for operating a variety of construction equipment used in the maintenance of highways. Proficient in all aspects of Equipment Operator I position. Receives direct supervision from Section Supervisor or Assistant Section Supervisor.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS / TYPICAL TASKS- Operate construction equipment safely, including trucks with Class “B” CDL, loaders, rollers, and front bucket backhoes.
- Maintain equipment by greasing, oiling, cleaning, changing tires, and making minor repairs at the semi‑skilled level of an automotive technician.
- Assist a skilled automotive technician with major repairs.
- Keep records of fuel, oil, parts and supplies used.
- Under supervision may assist in other related highway maintenance work or landfill operations.
- Train other maintenance employees in safe operation of construction equipment.
- Perform related work as required.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Thorough knowledge of the organization and functions of County Government and related laws.
- Ability to understand and follow specific instructions.
- Working knowledge of safe operating limits, traffic regulations, safety regulations and practices for various units of equipment.
- Basic knowledge of gasoline and diesel engine operation and care.
- Ability to operate a variety of construction equipment, make minor repairs, assist with major repairs, read and interpret road maps, keep simple records, and perform other related maintenance functions under supervision.
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Two years of experience operating construction equipment and commercial trucks.
- A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.
Ability to lift 50 pounds. Work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required. Hearing and visual acuity requirements as described.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS- Valid Class “B” CDL for air‑brake vehicles or ability to obtain within 9 months of employment.
- Ability to obtain CDL learners permit within 60 days if no valid CDL at hire.
- Training provided for CDL acquisition.
- Required certifications: ATSSA Maryland State Flaggers Card, forklift operator, first aid, and CPR within one year of employment (depending on assignment).
