Key Responsibilities
  • Receive 9-1-1 emergency and non-emergency calls, interrogate callers to determine the nature and location of incidents.
  • Interpret caller information, prioritize incidents, and dispatch law enforcement, EMS, fire, and public works personnel.
  • Calm callers, provide instructions, and relay geographical information to responding units.
  • Use phone, radio, and computer simultaneously while monitoring multiple screens for all on‑duty personnel.
  • Access confidential files (wanted persons, driver licenses, warrants, protective orders) and enter data for user agencies.
  • Transmit and receive information over multiple radio frequencies to detect emergencies and exchange data.
  • Inform appropriate agencies of calls, broadcast Amber Alert notifications, and make follow‑up calls for vehicle dispositions and other needs.

Qualifications
  • Minimum typing speed of 30 words per minute.
  • Accurate transcription of spoken information to relay to first responders.
  • Strong composure, ability to reassure callers, and collect precise information during crises.
  • Ability to produce accurate narratives from multiple sources.
  • Concise paraphrasing of vital information and prioritization of calls.
  • Experience operating radio and telephone communications equipment.
  • Successful completion of Level II background investigation, polygraph, and drug test.
  • Must work on‑site in Vernal.
Additional Requirements

New hires must obtain Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) certification and Dispatcher Certification through POST during the probationary period and maintain both certifications thereafter. Full‑time work schedule (at least 2,080 hours annually) qualifies for Public Safety Retirement under HB 115.

About the Role

Certified Emergency Dispatchers provide dispatching services to multiple jurisdictions including state and local public safety agencies, Highway Patrol, law enforcement, fire departments, and other state agencies. Dispatchers make urgent decisions that affect public safety and life and health of the public and public safety employees.
