Position Summary
This position coordinates total nursing care for patients, participates in patient and family teaching, acts as a patient advocate and works as part of a team with ancillary and non‑nursing departments.
Essential Functions- Perform plan of care intervention, including medication administration, specimen collection, clinical treatments, and other medical care treatment.
- Document patient care given.
- Monitor, record, and communicate patient condition as appropriate to the care team, physician, patient, and family.
- Assist patients with activities of daily living, including personal hygiene, elimination, nutrition, and ambulation.
- Collaborate as needed across disciplines to coordinate patient care, including transfer, discharge, referral, and spiritual/psychosocial support needs.
- Evaluate learning needs of patient and/or family and provide education appropriate to age, culture, condition, and circumstances.
- Advocate for the physical and emotional well‑being of the patient.
- Assess the patient's condition and nursing care needs.
- Set goals and prescribe appropriate nursing interventions to meet physical, psychological, social and rehabilitative needs.
- Develop individual nursing care plans.
- Implement care plans and make revisions as needed.
- Evaluate patient care outcomes.
- Collaborate with physicians and other hospital employees.
- Administer medications, treatments and therapies.
- Communicate with patients and oversee the provision of care.
- Provide patients and/or family with instruction and education relevant to condition.
- Accurately document nursing observations, assessments, medications, treatments, and other care given.
- Assist with orientation and training of personnel and students.
- Participate and attend meetings as required or assigned.
- Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.
- Maintain facility equipment, supplies and work areas.
- Assist in the orientation of new employees.
- Coordinate and supervise activities of employees and department operations.
- Participate in performance and process improvement activities.
Associate's Degree in Nursing required;
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing preferred.
One or more years of recent Labor and Delivery, Postpartum, and Newborn Nursery experience preferred.
Certifications- BCLS upon completion of hospital orientation.
- ACLS and PALS within six months of hire or transfer to the position.
- Current American Heart Association BLS certification within 90 days after hire date.
- Current S.T.A.B.L.E. certification or obtained after 6 months of nursery experience but prior to completing 12 months of nursery experience.
- Successful completion of Neonatal Resuscitation certification within 90 days after hire date.
Must hold a current RN license in the state of practice.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities- Ability to understand, communicate, and react effectively to patient and family needs.
- Critical thinking.
- Work well under pressure while remaining calm and maintaining customer focus.
The physical demands include standing, walking, sitting for extended periods, using hands to handle objects, reaching with hands and arms, climbing stairs, balancing, kneeling, bending, crouching, crawling, talking or hearing, tasting or smelling, and occasionally lifting or moving up to 20 pounds. Repetitive motion of the upper body is required for extended use of a computer. Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Work Environment and Travel RequirementsWork environment is a well‑lit, ventilated, and climate‑controlled office and hospital setting with routine office equipment. Occasionally, the employee may be exposed to blood borne pathogens, contagious illnesses, toxic chemicals, and biohazardous materials, requiring protective equipment. Minimal overnight travel (up to 10%) by land or air may be required.
