Job Summary: Provides direct and indirect patient care in the emergency care setting. Delivers care with initiative, flexibility, and responsibility under minimal supervision. Triages patients safely, rapidly, and accurately as they enter the emergency care system. Determines priorities based on physical and psychosocial needs and factors affecting patient flow. Communicates with Emergency Department physicians about changes in status, symptoms, and diagnostic results.
Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provide direct patient care, evaluate outcomes, consult with specialists as required, and adjust nursing care plans to ensure optimal patient care.
- Perform head-to-toe assessments on all patients with planned reassessments as per policy, including pediatric, adolescent, geriatric, and general populations.
- Adequately assess and reassess pain; utilize appropriate pain management techniques; educate patient and family on pain management.
- Ensure care is delivered in an environment that promotes patient safety and reduces potential medical errors.
- Monitor hemodynamic status and interpret results accurately.
- Demonstrate knowledge of cardiac monitoring, identify dysrhythmias, and treat appropriately.
- Assign triage categories accurately.
- Maintain accurate nursing documentation including histories, conditions, treatments, responses, and assessments of changes.
- Respect and address psychosocial, cultural, ethnic, and religious/spiritual needs of patients and families; act as liaison among administration, patients, physicians, and other healthcare providers.
- Provide age-appropriate care with knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan; interpret data to identify age-specific needs.
- Interact professionally with patients and families and involve them in care planning.
- Develop teaching plans based on identified learning needs; involve family when appropriate and evaluate effectiveness.
- Maintain current knowledge of medications and their correct administration according to patient age and clinical condition.
- Adhere to the five medication rights to minimize errors.
- Prepare, administer, monitor, and discontinue IV fluids as ordered.
- Maintain established department policies, procedures, objectives, performance improvement programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards.
- Create a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients and families per hospital standards.
- Ensure adequate supplies and proper functioning of equipment; assist in cost containment through appropriate ordering and prudent use of supplies and equipment.
- Collaborate with other staff to achieve departmental objectives and maintain positive working relationships.
- Assist physicians with procedures in the Emergency Department when needed.
- Lead or supervise others as assigned; train new employees and monitor work of team members.
- Participate in performance improvement activities and ongoing professional development through education and current literature.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Maintain professional appearance and conduct at all times.
- Excellent attendance record.
- Wear appropriate clothing and ; maintain good rapport with physicians, administration, and staff.
- Represent the organization positively in the community and maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
- Comply with organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
- One year of med/surg or ICU experience, or equivalent preferred.
- Current Utah State RN license and ACLS certification are required.
- PALS, NRP, TNCC, ENPC required within 1 year of hire; CEN preferred.
