Job Summary: Provides direct and indirect patient care in the emergency care setting. Delivers care with initiative, flexibility, and responsibility under minimal supervision. Can triage safely, rapidly, and accurately every patient entering the emergency care system. Determines priorities of care based on physical and psychosocial needs, as well as factors influencing patient flow. Communicates with Emergency Department physicians about changes in the patient status, symptoms, and results of diagnostic studies.
Responds quickly and accurately to changes in condition or response to treatment.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Provides direct patient care, evaluates outcomes, consults with other specialists as required, and adjusts nursing care processes to ensure optimal patient care.
- Performs head-to-toe assessments on all patients and conducts reassessments per policy, including pediatric, adolescent, and geriatric populations.
- Assesses and reassesses pain, utilizes pain management techniques, and educates patients and families regarding pain management.
- Maintains patient safety and minimizes medical/healthcare errors in all aspects of care.
- Monitors hemodynamic status and correctly interprets the results.
- Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac monitoring, identifies dysrhythmias, and treats appropriately.
- Accurately assigns triage categories.
- Maintains accurate nursing documentation including histories, conditions, treatments, responses and assessment of changes.
- Respectfully treats patients and families, addressing psychosocial, cultural, ethnic and religious/spiritual needs; acts as liaison among administration, patients, physicians and other providers.
- Provides age-appropriate care by understanding growth and development across the life span.
- Engages patients and families in the plan of care and education, as appropriate.
- Maintains knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age and clinical condition; follows medication rights to reduce errors.
- Prepares, administers, monitors, and discontinues IV fluids as needed.
- Adheres to departmental policies, safety, infection control, and performance improvement standards.
- Ensures a safe, comfortable, and therapeutic environment for patients and families.
- Maintains supplies and ensures proper functioning of equipment; assists in cost containment through prudent ordering and conservation of supplies.
- Cooperates with staff to achieve departmental objectives and positive employee relations.
- Assists physicians with procedures in the Emergency Department as needed.
- Leads and supervises others, trains new staff, and allocates workload appropriately.
- Participates in performance improvement activities and ongoing professional development.
- Performs other related duties as assigned or requested.

- Complies with organizational policies regarding ethical business practices.
- One year med/surg or ICU experience, or equivalent preferred
- Current Utah State RN license and ACLS certification required
- PALS, NRP, TNCC, ENPC required within 1 year of hire; CEN preferred
