What you can expect:
This position requires participation in a variety of basic technical work for sewer and water treatment, collection, and distribution facilities, involving both field and office support of Public Works Operations assignments. It requires operating various types of equipment; performing related mathematical computations; completing reports; executing Standard Operating Procedures; and providing support to other Public Works Operations staff.
How you will make an impact- Become proficient in office procedures e.g. time sheets, mileage, expense reports, etc.
- Flush fire hydrants
- Read, interpret, organize and assist in the creation of technical documents and calculations associated with the position.
- Assist in reviewing field and record information to be used in producing required EPA documentation and monthly reports.
- Exercise valves using trailer mounted valve turning units or by hand
- Collect asset location and information by GPS
- Collect manhole data using visual and measuring devices for accurate data collection.
- Respond to emergency water breaks, sewer back‑ups, lift station problems, hydrant leaks and other system malfunctions.
- Attend training and perform non‑permitted and permitted confined space entries.
- Read water meters
- Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment and refer defects or needed repairs to supervisor; clean or lubricate equipment
- Order parts, and fill material requests
- Perform all duties in conformance with appropriate safety and security standards
- Have the ability to travel out of town during the week to meet customer and project needs
- Evening and weekend availability required

- Must have a high school diploma or a High School Equivalency (HSE) Certificate.
- The employee must be capable of driving/operating a motor vehicle for company business, maintain a valid Illinois Driver’s License, and have a registered, insured personal vehicle.
- Self‑starting, detail‑oriented individual that demonstrates curiosity about individual project processes or project subject matter and willingness to participate in various training exercises.
- Work in a collaborative environment under the supervision and mentoring of other civil engineers and engineering technicians.
- Ability to manage personal schedule to adhere to multiple assignment deadlines while communicating progress status.
- Proficiency with software products:
Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Outlook, Teams, Word, PowerPoint, etc.) and PDF editing software (Adobe, Bluebeam, etc.). - Work is performed in both an office environment and outdoors and requires moderate physical demands, including sitting, standing, or walking on uneven surfaces and/or exposure to inclement or extreme weather conditions for prolonged periods of time.
- The ability and desire to take educational courses to improve on the knowledge and new regulation set in place from the EPA or other federal agencies related to the water and wastewater fields.
- The ability and desire to become a Certified Water & Wastewater Operator.
- Requires ability to speak audibly and listen actively.
- Requires ability to use computers, telephones, and other office equipment.
- Requires ability to sit for extended periods of time.
- May require occasional bending and lifting up to 25 pounds.
- May require periodic travel up to 30%.
